beautiful
it's too bad that this album and music like it does not get more attention, or maybe those of us who enjoy it like it that way. i must admit that upon first listen i thought puracane was just another faceless 'trip hop' wannabee, soon headed for the used bin. further listens have really proven me wrong. this cd runs the gamut from sweet to bitter to sad to manic, each accompanied by a rich and textured soundscape created not only by sequencers and electronics, but live instruments like a piano. these guys have an excellent sense of melody and practice subtlety in key and mood changes like pros. AND just to prove that they have excellent taste, they throw in a beautiful, albeit faithful cover of Jane's Addiction's 'summertime rolls'. i can also promise that the bjork comparisons will completely leave your mind after just a few listens. Her voice and the way she sings remind me of Sarah 'what's her name' from Dubstar. This music occupies a rare place in 'trip hop' music, between the poppy, commercial stuff like Olive and the esoteric, experimental stuff like Laika and Tricky's latest stuff. Furthermore, it's an excellent buy here on amazon, as i too have seen it in stores for ... bucks (that's how much i paid). Other surprise favorites in the same vein: Baby Fox 'a normal family', Soma Sonic 'future'.
From a Ski Movie
To be honest, I originally only bought "Things You Should Leave Alone" because I heard two of the songs, "things you should leave alone" and "big day" in two ski movies, both produced by Match Stick Productions. I was anticipating a luke warm c.d with two or three really good songs worthy of listening to over and over again. I was really wrong, and pleasantly disappointed. The songs are high tech, and the vocals are really dreamy and hypnotic. The whole album is very seductive. From a skier, it is something you can ski to. It is something, with the volume up, you can run to, you can paint to, you can do anything to it. I normally don't like that kind of music, but Puracane is very good, and quirky. Their cover of Jane's Addiction "Summer Rolls" is really good. All in all, the cd is good. There are a few songs that need to be skipped over, because they are too hypnotizing. The rest are breathe taking, landscapes of music engineering and eerie vocals.
holy ...
Wow. This CD is probably my fave CD out of all my CDs. It is so hypnotic and relaxing, I can listen to it what ever my mood. Ali Roger's voice is truly astonishing, and I feel like I'm in a total different dimension. Only negative thing about Puracane is that they haven't released any other album. I don't know if they are planning to or not, but I truly hope they do cuz they rock.
