Poor production values
I bought this recording on a whim as I am a fan of Carnatic music and the CD only cost a few bucks. You get what you pay for. Neither the CD box nor the booklet provides any information whatsoever about Carnatic music, the instruments, the performers or the pieces being played. It sounds to me like a live recording of a Bharat Natyam dance performance (you can hear the ankle bells of the dancer at times), but the uninitiated listener wouldn't know that, I'm sure. Even worse, the live recording has not been edited or mixed at all so that the balance between drums, flute and singer is poor. This could have been a nice introduction to someone interested in Indian music, but the shabby production qualities of the CD render it a poor choice. On the positive side, I enjoy the raw immediacy of a live performance and can picture a Bharat Natyam dancer doing her steps and mudras. For that reason the CD is not a total loss. But I wish the producers had put a little more effort into this release. What's the point?
