Listening to this New Year's Eve 1999 lovefest, it becomes clear very quickly just how influential the Judds were in shaping country music of the 1990s. In fact, their combination of '70s-style soft rock, '80s-style monster ballads, snarling Southern soul, and basic neotraditional two-steppers serves as something of a New Country template, despite the fact that they were superior to much of what followed in their wake. They reach as far back as 1983 for their earliest hits and yet the sound fits remarkably well within the turn-of-the-century landscape. Getting together for the first time in eight years, mama Naomi and daughter Wynonna roll through a blend of Judds favorites and Wynonna solo hits, sounding completely revitalized while the raucous crowd relishes every moment. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews
If you weren't there live, this is the next best thing!
It all started back in 1983, country music was going through a revival and The Judds were at the forefront of that transition. They brought a certain glamour to country music with their sparkles and smiles. Not since Elvis had a genre of music been so captivated with an artist.
The Judds created their glorious sound until December 8, 1991 when they performed their Farewell Concert. Wynonna soldiered on and became a SUPERSTAR. But Naomi sat back and concentrated on other things, her health, her writing and her motivational speaking tour. But that all changed on December 31, 1999 when The Judds came back together and performed for the first time in 8 years.
This two-disc set showcases Judd classics, Wynonna-alona solo classics and new tunes from Miss Wy. With The Judds you get what you see, you get the humor, the spark, the harmony. But more importantly you feel like you are in the Judds living room, or their backyard.
The CD is "live" and you won't miss Wynonna's giggle, Naomi's banter...you see their fun, you see their honesty. This is actually their second "live cd" with the first showcasing their 1985 tour. They sounded great back then, but 1999 shows their maturity and Wynonna has never sounded better, whether as a partner or alona-Wynonna. This girl can rock.
This CD is for those who wanted to be there that night and couldn't. This is what you missed, but you can fix that with the purchase of this "must" country album.
Incredible & Inspiring!
In the younger Judd days, Wynonna was kind of the "Silent' partner with the great voice, and the focus tended to be on Naomi. (Even though, the movie portrayal of Wynonna as a little girl depicted a sarcastic, hilarious little hellion). Now that she's all grown up, Wynonna has come into her own and developed an "intrigue" and "fascination" as incredible as Naomi's, and her voice (always wonderful) has strengthened and become even more powerful.
This was the "concert" you never wanted to end. They sang all their best songs, and it's as if they reach out and send love and compassion and hope through their music and through their lives.
I am fighting a terminal illness, and I have learned one important thing from the Judds. I remember in the movie when the Judds were starting out and getting rejected by everyone, and they were discouraged, Wynonna said to her mother, "What are the chances of our making it anyway--about a billion to one?" Naomi answered her and said, "Then, we'll be that one!" I never forgot it. When a doctor told me my chances were about a million to one, I remembered Naomi and said, "Then I'll be that one!" These two women have given us all so much in so many ways. I read somewhere that Naomi struggles because she wants to "save" everybody, and she can't. Maybe not, but she can certainly give people the "Hope" and the "Faith" in God to save themselves, and she has done that. God bless these two wonderful women!
Awesome CD!
The Judds Reunion: Live is an overall awesome cd. As someone who was at the concert in Phoenix, its sound quality is great, and it makes you feel like you were right there at the concert. It brings back so many memories for those who were at the concert.
The songs they selected were great. The Wyld Unknown was an awesome performance and an awesome song to put on the disk. Other great songs are The River of Time, Love Can Build A Bridge, Come Some Rainy Day, and Tuff Enuff, which Wy does did not perform for the rest of the tour. Tuff Enuff is my favorite on the cd as it was SO energetic and just an overall great rendition of a great song.
As a long time Judd fan, and BIG music fan--everyone will have a great time listening to this cd.
