Obscure Psychedelia from minor Liverpool band
The Koobas (also known as "Kubas") originated from Liverpool in the wave of groups who came after the Beatles. They produced a string of singles on a variety of labels in the prevailing styles of whatever era the single was released in.
This set consists of the Koobas' one and only LP--a low budget "concept album" of great psychedelic guitar rock with the tracks running together in the most classic 1967/68 mode. This is a good entertaining set, but do not expect soul because the Koobas definitely were not doing soul music by this time. The extra tracks include the Mod classic "My Face," the overblown psychedelicized version of Cat Stevens' "First Cut is the Deepest" and the one song which can lay some limited claim to the soul designation--"Sweet Music." If you love low budget British psych rockers such as The Smoke, you will love the Koobas.

I own the original vinyl single of "Take Me for A Little While" complete with picture sleeve released on the old Kapp Records label. I was really surprised that this version is far better than the version recorded by Cat Stevens. Then, I bought a compilation cd entitled "What About Us?" On this compilation, are 2 tracks. The first is Take Me for A Little While and then there was the b side "You'd Better Make Up Your Mind". Wow! Both sides of a single on one compilation. After that,I found another compilation cd called "Liverpool 1963-1968 Volume One". (By the way, this turned out to be the only volume)On this disc, among other great goodies, are three tracks. "The First Cut is the Deepest" by The Koobas and "I Love Her" and "Magic Potion",both by The Kubas. When I read the liner notes in the booklet included,it stated that both groups were one in the same. Then, lastly, but certainly not leastly, I purchased this disc. I was instantly liking it and thought that I wished I had more of their music on vinyl besides the only single. This is really great music from this period. I do not know what happened to the other 3 guys, but, Keith Ellis late joined Van Der Graaf Generator and was a member of the group Boxer.
