Fine if you're not too picky
If you're looking for the original recordings in pristine original quality, you will not get it here. The music here is good, but it seems to be drawn from later re-recordings. Some of the material that is drawn from original 78s can have some reverb added, although that's not always the case. If you're a budget label, you have to get what you can get. Some of the recordings are muddy-sounding, probably somebody's atempt at trying to reduce tape hiss. They should have kept the hiss. *smile* I'm not an expert on big band music, but it seems musically speaking the performances are quite decent. I think it would be good for somebody who's curious to collect some of the big band sounds and who doesn't care about whether they're the originals or not. Despite sound qulaity flaws mentioned above, it's a keeper. I'm kind of a budget-label collector, so such flaws kind of add to the allure of the set in a quirky kind of way.

THE ROOTS OF SWING N' JIVE 4 CD box set gets high marks for providing nearly four hours of music at a very fair price. All tracks are duplicates of LP cuts, 78s and a few radio transcriptions. The overall effect of this album is very much like sampling at random a well-loved record collection. As with individual preferences, certain orchestras are better represented than others. Thus, Cab Calloway has 16 tracks here, while Charlie Barnet only one; the Glenn Miller aggregation's 11 sides are offset by Les Brown's lone selection, and so on.

There's no liner notes, and no running times. What's here though is plenty of terrific big band music by a full dozen famous units. Sound quality varies from acceptable to very good. A fine set for lovers of shellac and vinyl big band music.
