An adventurous second attempt
Trojan's first dub box set was a stab at introducing the casuallistener to the original analog sound of dub made in Jamaican studiosin the 1970s and early '80's, before the dominance of dancehall and digital production shifted the island's musical focus. So that set contained a huge amount of mixes by King Tubby and other engineers who learned at his feet, resulting in stylistic overlap (maybe overkill) and a predictable package, despite some wonderful tracks. This time around, Trojan has dropped in Augustus Pablo, Niney the Observer, and some madder-than-mad Upsetter mixes to give a better-rounded perspective and more adventurous package. Fans of the idiosyncratic singer Leo Graham will be delighted with his twin appearance on two of the three Upsetter tracks, and if you dig Graham chances are the Upsetter's deejaying on "Kingdom of Dub," set off by the bell tone borrowed from "Roast Fish and Cornbread," will appeal to you. The inclusion of any Pablo from his classic years is always a pleasure, and the Niney tracks hold their own next to the Scratch mixes. Beyond these deviations from the previous set, there's more Tommy McCook, more Tubby, more Scientist, more Prince Jammy...
Dub and Duberer
A good collection spanning about 25 years of Rub-a-Dub, Although without any revealing info about the musicians or who actually mixed each track, just a sometimes questionable writing credit. For example a few tracks are credited to Roots Radics, and Aggrovators, when I know these were mixed by Scientist and Tubby respectively, and others credited to Scientist, Tubby, Jammy, etc. With still others credited to the producer of the works, who knows who wrote, produced or mixed each cut.
Still, coming in at 50 tracks including several classics and only one or two throwaways(if you dislike mid '80s casio drum machine and synth tracks), around 45 or so riddims which means only a few versions on the same cut(and believe me the ones that do appear twice are well good), this is a bargain: the domestic issue being only [$$].
So, for the somewhat confusing liner notes: 2 stars.
In it for the music(which I suspect most of you reading this are): 5 stars. wicked.
Also the sound quality is a little flat for a CD. Does not sound digitally remastered as advertised. Shame on you mr.trojan!
Not as good as volume 1 but...
In my opinion. This Trojan dub volume is not as good as volume 1. But still great. How couldn't it be? As it's just like the first volume, bringing together tracks from some of the best dub artists, it's a great addition to your reggae/dub collection.
