a SUPERB SET!5
This is a little known, but wonderful compilation. The piano concerti are vividly done, with a warmer acoustic than usual. And the interpretation of the Ravel orchestral works can hold a candle to just about anything else out there. If you don't have this repertoire, this set makes a nice introduction to Ravel's sound world. Highly recommended!

I can't say that I have any others to compare it with. I was never a big fan of Bolero, even as a lustful teen when the movie "10" came out with Bo Derick. It's amazing how a popular movie can revitalize a piece of music; and Bo Derick certainly did that in that movie!

I picked up this CD a number of years ago at a discount bin thinking it would be good to have to round out my classical CD collection. Much to my good fortune, I was very pleasantly surprised. Not only did I find myself really enjoying the other pieces, but also found the Bolero to be quite expressive without being over dramatic. This is a lovely version. The orchestra is crisp and well recorded. Casadesus pulls out all the stops to bring Bolero to it's climax.

There may be one flaw to this CD and that may be that these pieces might benefit from a larger orchestra which would produce a bigger sound. But I like the intimacy and the piano accompaniment fits well with this sized orchestra in the "Concerto pour la main gauche" and the "Concerto en sol majeur." Georges Pludermacher plays beautifully both technically and lyrically. This CD is a good example of Ravel's orchestral works. I can say with confidence, despite not having other comparisons, that enough emotion and thought went into the makings of this music to make it worthy of your attention.
