The real roots of Tom Jobim...4
To really get a feel for how revolutionary Jobim's compositions were, we should look at what a tough time his contemporaries had when they tried to take on the new style Jobim pioneered. This phenomenal 3-CD set collects dozens of rarities from the mid-1950s and early '60s (along with a handful of later recordings) and lays bare the stylistic limitations of the Brazilian pop establishment at the time when bossa nova became king. This collection includes many songs written well before the "official" start of the bossa nova, with performances by artists as diverse as Vicente Celestino, Albertinho Fortuna, Isaura Garcia, Sylvia Telles, Dick Farney, Claudete Soares, and others - some who have faded from history's glance, and others who are still well-known. By now, these melodies are etched in our minds, mainly through the effortless style of performers such as Joao and Astrud Gilberto, and the suave bossa performers that came in their wake. It's instructive, then, to hear the relatively awkward fashion with which the pre-bossa crowd tackled this material, and the surprising stiffness of their performances. Hammy baritones, barbershop-ish vocal groups, chirpy, operatic European-styled female singers populated the landscape, and while they were drawn to the new music, they could not summon the graceful elan that the bossa crowd possessed. Jobim, along with contemporaries such as Carlos Lyra and Vinicius de Moraes, liberated Brazil from the bland anglophilia that had taken root in the postwar era, eradicating the attraction of tepid, safe Edmundo Ros-style pop with one gentle, samba-tinged sweep of bossa's magic wand. Anyone seeking to understand the history of Brazilian pop in general and bossa nova in particular should seek this collection out. The Revivendo label also has an amazing assortment of historical, pre-bossa samba recordings, well worth checking out.

Tom Jobim raros compassos, 75 tracks, 41 different Vocalists, 14 featured Instrumentalists, 8 Songwriting Collaborators5
The Man From Ipanema is a very important CD, with firsthand accounts of our Composer by friends and Collaborators, but it has a tendacy to leave the consumer craving a wider variety of songs from Jobim's extensive catelogue.

Tom Jobim raros compassos is a teriffic opportunity to enjoy young Jobim, in his formidable years, when he was a little wet behind the ears.

An affordable 3 CD box set, over 3 hours in length, that meets and exceeds all expectations.

It's a box set I had been eyeing untill I could no longer bear going another day without it.

The majority of the recordings are from the pivotal years between 1956 to 1964.

Revivendo, the manufacturer of the box set, is to be commended, all the main feature artists, songwriting credits, and chronological dates for the songs are included in the liner notes.

Studying the portrait of Jobim on the front cover makes me remember what it was like to slip on a pair of white jeans, new leather shoes, and slick my hair back.

Clean, dressed for success.

Alot like how Jobim must've felt when he recieved a residual check.

Dressed for battle.

35 of the 75 tracks appear on the box set once.

40 of the tracks are songs Jobim recorded a multiple of times, employing different vocalists and arrangements.

Lending new color.

Some songs appear two to five different times in various guises, some feature a lead Male Vocalist, others a Female, versions written for Choir, or an Instrumental.

Listen how a song is shaped.

Our Composer had faith in his early material.

A number of Jobim's early recordings still sound very modern.

Look for songs on this box set like, Sucedeu Assim, Magoa, Amor Sem Adeus, Inutil Paisagem, So Tinha De Ser Com Voce', and Vivo Sonhando.

Garota is a very powerful, beautiful melody in the sure hands of Raphael Rabelto's soft nylon guitar strings. Years later, the melody resurfaces for piano, on Stoneflower, as Choro. Very lovely... indeed!

Flor Do Mato, sounds alot like Meu amigo Radames, an off the cuff gem from Symphonic Jobim.

Fans and cohorts alike, will testify Jobim accrued the nickname Tom in the early 50's, when he was plugging away at his craft.

There are around 19 tracks Jobim penned by himself, all the other songs are collaborations, Jobim had a gift for involving and engaging everybody.

Helena Jobim is accredited for helping to write Nao Devo Sonhar.

Between 1956 and 1964, important Collaborators appear, Bonfa', Newton Mendonca, Billy Blanco, Marino Pinto, Dolores Duran, and Aloysio de Oliveira.

Tom Jobim raros compassos has over 30 hard to find recordings between 1957 and 1964, co-penned by Jobim's new partner, Vinicius de Moraes.

Where else can you find a CD with that sort of depth?

After the resounding success of their hit play, Orpheus Of The Carnival, Jobim and de Moreas forged an alliance to break into the Billboard Charts and Hit Parade.

Take Samba Nao Brinquedo, Maria Da Graca, O Grande Amor, and Acho Que Sim to heart, make them your own.

Relish listening to an early recording of Chega de Saudade written for Men's Choir.

And early arrangements for Woman's Choir, Eu Sei Que Vo Te Amar, and Eu Nao Existo Sem Voce.

Tom Jobim raros compassos has the dreamy Meditacao, with Isaura Garcia, and the heartfelt Estrada Do Sol featuring Maria Helena Raposo.

Songs that have a Circus or Carnival feel, that must've been written for TV... Frevo De Orfeu and So Danca Samba.

Slow romantic songs to help set the mood, fast poppy, peppery songs to get you up and dancing.

Serious compositions for Bonfa' and Jobim to break into the Cinema, such as A Chuva Caiu.

Jobim doesn't sing lead on any of the tracks, surprisingly, a number of vocals appear to be written and sung in his range.

Isto Eu Nao Faco Nao, featuring Mario Reis, Insensatez, and Inutil Paisagem with Wilson Miranda, sound amazingly like Jobim.

During the late 50's, Jobim had to follow rigid rules set by Record Producers and TV Studio owners.

These are the lean years Jobim described in The Man From Ipanema, as, "Chasing the rent", and, "A tailor for other men's suits".

Rio had made the transition to LP's but alot of the microphones and microphone placements were out of date.

Swing was slowly being phased out for Torchlight music.

As the initial chords for organ, heavily laden with echo rip loudly into Este Se Olhar, the first track on Vol. #3, be prepared to usher your ears into the Atomic Age.

The Man From Ipanema has some very powerful stories how Jobim was at his dark hour when he first toured New York, but men and women who genuinely loved and and believed in him, helped Jobim usher a New Age of relaxed attitudes, good music and a strong comittment to the enviroment.

Good music and good taste will never go out of date.

Talent is a sort of burden, it's our responsibility to expand and build on our strengths.

Tom Jobim raros compassos is testimony, be true to your self.

Nurture your dreams.

Water them routinely.
