The real deal - and WHAT a deal
I love music from the Middle East and this disc of Qawwali (Islamic devotional) music is one of the best examples. (I don't know my musical geography well, so please bear with me.)

The structure is very similar to works by Pakistani artist Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - long pieces with a male vocalist who sings phrases that are repeated by his backing musicians. To the untrained ear, this could easily be mistaken for one of Nusrat's many recorded performances, yet the approach here is more even tempered, without Nusrat's ecstatic bursts of vocal technique, yeilding a very solid and enriching performance. (The idea - particularly effective for brother Nusrat - is that the singer is bridging the gap between the heavens and the earth for us, and it suddenly taken by the force of the music.) The recording quality is amazing (considering the cheapness of the packaging - no liner notes, no musician info) with crisp tablas and a broad, gentle echo to the vocals, as if recorded in a huge, lofty cathedral. I'll be basking often in this superb work. Give the sound samples a try, and if you like the small bits, you will surely be taken in by this rare bargain offering.
