Even before he steps out onto the stage, the audience is on its feet clapping and screaming for Barry Manilow. Walking out and launching into "Could It Be Magic?" Manilow proves his pipes are as strong and clear as ever and his suits still dapper. He promises "beautiful melodies, passionate lyrics, great grooves, and maybe even some swiveling hips" to the delight of the sold-out house. The video was filmed in Nashville in February 2000 and includes half an hour of footage not included in the direct TV broadcast.
A consummate showman, Manilow performs 24 of his biggest hits accompanied by full orchestra. "Tryin' to Get the Feeling Again" speaks to everyone whose heart has been broken but holds out for love. During "Can't Smile Without You," the audience holds up signs bearing smiley faces, hearts, and "ME" in hopes that Manilow will pick them for his traditional duet. "Bandstand Boogie," the long-time theme song for American Bandstand, rocks the house. Then Manilow brings it down for perennial favorite, "Mandy," which segues into "Even Now."
Manilow's timing is impeccable, and he knows exactly how to work the adoring crowd. The accordion interlude is particularly amusing, as is "Flight of the Bumblebee" played on a kazoo. Mixing pop, jazz, disco, and big band, Manilow moves smoothly through the two-hour set, alternately sitting at the piano or standing at the mike. The bluesy "That's Life" gets an infusion of energy from audience participation, and "Copacabana" is just as infectious as ever (with Manilow doing a little of that hip-swiveling). Ending with a heartfelt encore of "Stars in the Night," Manilow Live! is a must-have for fans of the man. --Dana Van Nest

One of the Best $20 music DVD purchases you'll make
I'm 27 and if you look at my music-DVD collection you would laugh...Metallica, Sinatra, Dave Matthews, Barry Manilow. Buy this disc. Even if you dont wnt to necessarily watch the DVD, you can put on the DVD, shut off the TV, and listen to one of the best Barry discs you will ever hear. Every song you want to hear from Barry is on this disc, and its in DTS format for superior sound quality to CD (I am assuming you have a HT set-up at home). Remember the first time you heard a CD and you were outright amazed at the difference in sound quality compared to tapes? You'll have the same feeling about DVD compared to CD after hearing this. Even without the center channel the sound is far superior. The fact that he plays with a real live full orchestra as compared to other shows he does where they are just taped tracks that he basically sings over is another reason to buy this DVD. The sound quality is just great. All in all, this is a must buy for anyone who remotely likes Manilow. He plays all his classics (every one), a few new songs, and does justice to 3 Sinatra songs on this DVD.
Barry Manilow: Manilow Live!
This concert performance by Barry Manilow was recorded at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) in February 2000, and he is accompanied by a 30-piece orchestra. He sings many of his greatest hits including "Could It Be Magic?", "Mandy", "Weekend In New England", "One Voice" and "Copacabana" There is also a tribute to Frank Sinatra which was a real crowd pleaser as well as two songs from the musical HARMONY. Barry's diverse musical style shines in this performance, and the excitement of the audience is also captured with several standing ovations! I would recommend this concert very highly.
Best Manilow show currently avaiable
This show is for fans and non fans alike. It's amazing. Barry is in great voice, his selection of songs is superb and the orchestra sounds divine. "Every single day" and "Stars in the night" (from his forthcoming broadway musical "Harmony") alone are worth the 20 something dollars you pay for this DVD. They're some of the most beautiful songs I have EVER heard by ANY performer. Rivetting. They'll take your breath away. No wonder Rolling Stone has called him "the showman of our generation".
