Three stars for Kembra Pfahler...
...just turn your camera towards her and you'll have an interesting film. As for the rest -- well, there's a reason R. Kern has a a DVD of his films (Hardcore Collection) and couple of coffee table books of his photography in print (New York Girls & Model Release) and Nick Zedd continues to languish in obscurity/late80's-early 90's curiosityville: talent.
"War is Menstrual Envy" has a vague narrative and atrocious cinematography (whole sequences are shot on video rather than on film, surely an economic rather than an Oliver Stone-like aesthetic choice). After the two interminable opening segments, we get to Annie Sprinkle having sex with a man with terrible burn scars on his entire body, then Annie and Kembra (in full Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black blue bodypaint) try to shock a military guy, then a redneck gets his brains blown out (complete with lingering shot of the gory, yet fake-looking results).
I remember this movie being described as Zedd's epic in mags such as Film Threat Video Guide and Psychotronic back in 1991-92. In truth, it's just a string of vignettes that are held together only by the delightfully surrealist presence of Kembra Pfahler.
Scary and intense, and sometimes very powerful
Nick Zedd films are an acquired taste. This one is probably his most interesting. It's more like a series of sick (and thought-provoking) set-pieces than a straight film. Some are better than others, but it's never boring (except for the overlong scene of a naked chick super-imposed over an underwater background). Some of it reminded me of Pink Flamingos as some of the "actors" do nasty stuff for real (one guy carves the word WAR into his chest with a razor). I personally love Zedd's films and think they're fascinating. For people who like bizarre cinema.
