Virile, yet vulnerable, with a throbbing voice that embodied desire and defeat, and a soul occupied equally by God and Guilt, Conway Twitty was perhaps the most effective Nashville Sound singer of his era. He turned out soap operas you paid attention to even when you thought you knew better. The best known is probably the suggestive "You've Never Been This Far Before," but his work during the period immediately prior to that 1973 hit is even better--1971's "How Much More Can She Stand," in particular. Here's a man that can't get cheating out of his mind no matter how much he plays with the kids or watches TV, and you can feel his lust and self-loathing increasing with each line. Conway was so secure in his insecurities he didn't even mind when the extraordinary John Hughey, who played pedal steel like a man laying a shroud over his best friend, stole the song, as on "(Lost Her Love) On Our Last Date." Even after all this clearly became shtick, Conway could make you believe stuff nobody else could. --John Morthland

1958; 1968-1981...?
i love the CD, so i'll get that out in the open first. as far as the hits go, the CD deserves all 5 stars. the problem i have with the CD is the arrogance by MCA to only show the #1 Billboard hits he had with their company (despite the fact that the CD opens up with the original 1958 MGM version of "It's Only Make Believe"). i get annoyed when record labels ignore the other charts that used to be as watched as Billboard is. you had Record World, Cashbox, and Radio & Records all reporting the sales and airplay of albums and singles right along side Billboard. when you go beyond the Billboard data, you'll see that Conway hit #1 55 times (41 of the chart-toppers on Billboard, by the way!) starting in 1958 and picking up in 1968 and running virtually non-stop until late 1990! the fact that MCA used Billboard as the only chart to go by annoys me as much as the fact that his 1982-1986 #1's on Warner Brothers are left off...hardly making this a "#1 Hits Collection". still, the liner notes and pictures are priceless and the 33 songs on the CD are outstanding but to abruptly end things in 1981, as if to imply "that's it, he had no more #1 hits after RED NECKIN' LOVE MAKIN' NIGHT", is nonetheless callous on MCA's part.

Just As Much Soul As George Jones
Every track on this 2 cd set is a classic. This is by far the best Conway collection out there. Conway was a very soulful country singer like George Jones. If you wanna hear pure soulful country music listen to "After All The Good Is Gone" on cd #2. Just like Elvis,Razzy Bailey, T. Graham Brown, Jerry Lee, Freddy Fender, and Earl Thomas Conley, he recognized the close connection that R&B had to Country music and he never denied it-in fact, he embraced it with gracious open arms particularly while singing in front of a microphone, and that my friend is one of the reasons that made him so great.

Conway Twitty began his career as a rock'n'roll singer, during which time he had the biggest hit of his career, It's only make believe. This song has been covered many times and some of those covers have also been hits, including the cover by Glen Campbell. No other song that Conway ever did had quite that impact but the cumulative impact of all his country recordings is substantial. Conway was one of the most successful country singers of the twentieth century. On this collection you get It's only make believe plus many of the country songs that made him so successful. He spent most of his career recording for Decca and MCA but spent a few years with Warner. Some of his Warner hits that qualify for this collection are included but others are omitted.

There are several different charts but this compilation is based on Billboard. Some fans will point out that Conway had hits that made number one on other charts but not Billboard - those are not included here. A boxed set is available for those in need of something more comprehensive but this double CD will suit most people ideally.

Apart from It's only make believe, this set includes such classics as Hello darling, You've never been this far before and Linda on my mind - perhaps his three most important country hits. Among the other great songs here are Fifteen years ago, She needs someone to hold her, Touch the hand, Games that Daddies play, Tight fitting jeans and Red necking love making night.

The overwhelming majority of these songs are originals but Conway could do covers too. They are represented here by Lost her love on our last date (a vocal version of Floyd Cramer's instrumental Last date), I can't stop loving you (Don Gibson) and Rest your love on me (Bee Gees). This set also includes five duets with Loretta Lynn - After the fire is gone, Lead me on, Louisiana woman Mississippi man, As soon as I hang up the phone and Feelins'.

If you haven't got any of Conway's music, this is a great collection to buy. If you like it enough to explore further, you might go for Number ones - the Warner Brothers years. Another collection worth checking out is Silver Anniversary collection. If you like his duets with Loretta, you could buy Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn 20 greatest hits - this remains the best collection of the several focusing on their duets together.
