One of the best jazz compozers from the Baltic region
Raimond Pauls is the perfect example of a composer whose music is pleasant to listen by people of all ages. His melodies are full of harmony, individual character, style - really cool. You would never get tired of his songs - real pieces of art. Raimond Pauls has always been, and still is ahead in time of any composer in the former Soviet Union states.
Raimond Pauls - LATVIAN composer
I listend to my first Raimond Pauls Cd not two days ago. IT makes me wish I were fluent enough in this beautiful language to sing along. The melody and harmony of each song instantly manipulates your mood into that of the song. Each is powerful in their own way - whether playful, wistful, serious, patriotic or outright heart rendingly sad (balade mana vectevam - sings of his grandfather building his own coffin, among other incredibly poignant verses. The cd I own is Tik Dzintars Vien (only Amber).
It's shameful that Amazon only has one CD available and they did not even take the time to translate the titles. For a much wider and more intelligent display of Raimond Pauls, you might want to visit balticshop.com. There you will find a much superior collection than listed on this monolith's site.
The CD I have was re-mastered in 2002 and the quality is excellent. There is a warmth conveyed in this music not apparent on other cds. The Packaging and liner notes are well done and thorough (but not translated - these are pressed in Riga, after all)
Raimond Pauls is indeed the Serge Gainsbourg of Latvia.
To the previous reviewer: Your flattery is betrayed by your lack of facts. Raimond Pauls is not a subject of a former soviet state. Please take the time to show proper respect, if not historical accuracy: Raimond Pauls is a Latvian. His music is in the Latvian Language, which is still recuperating from near extinction at the hands of the Soviet State. To even mention Russia, Soviet, et al in your review of Raimonds is derogatory, and I suspect, would make Raimonds himself sneer - in spite of your flattery. Next time, get it right.
I'm off to Baltic Shops for my second Raimond CD.
to SIKL
Wow,looks like "sikl" has some brain damage by citing "Latvian joke" .I am Latvian and that joke is insult to Latvian nation and me as Latvian. There is none of Latvians who has welcomed Russian(Soviet Union) invaders. If some came to Latvia after warm water and electricity those were these so called soviet unioners(russians). Please, sikl, spare me,your shalow historical knowlidge desires more ,and don,t come to my country with such a idiotic comments.
And all the songs melodies written by Raimonds Pauls were IN LATVIAN FIRST,then traslate in russian afterwards. He is Latvian first and I dont know who you call nazis by putting such a lie fiiled review in here.To me ,you sound more like this word ,by making up something which does not refer to my country or my nation.
