With Three Chords and the Truth, her 1997 debut album, Missouri-born Sara Evans not only wowed listeners with her superb vocal chops, but also boldly and unpretentiously staked claim to a neo-traditionalist style that suggested she'd done a lot of listening to Loretta Lynn and the late Tammy Wynette in her younger days. With Born to Fly, her third album, Evans continues her descent from the neo-traditional high ground and her move uptown. She makes it clear she's also listened quite a bit to the likes of Trisha Yearwood and Bruce Hornsby, whose "Every Little Kiss" she ably covers here. On the exuberant title tune and on fine country-pop ballads like "I Could Not Ask for More" and the lovely "Saints and Angels," Evans proves she can just as sweetly and deftly patrol the uptown territory as she can the down-home highlands, which she revisits on the steel guitar-adorned weeper "I Learned That from You." Though not every song on Born to Fly insinuates its way into listeners' imaginations like the above-mentioned gems do, this solid, ambitious 11-song collection stands as another feather in this gifted young singer's colorful musical cap. --Bob Allen

Sara Steps Out
When Sara Evans emerged on the scene in 1997, she seemed to be a neo-traditionalist in the vein of fellow newcomer Lee Ann Womack and the great Patty Loveless. With No Place That Far in 1998, she began to merge the country side with slight country-pop leanings. Born To Fly completes this transformation, with the country-pop taking dominance on the album. That said, this is a great country-pop album, straddling the fence without going the Faith/Shania route. Saints and Angels is one of the best songs I've heard all year, and she actually makes the Diane Warren composition I Could Not Ask For More sound like something other than a throwaway track. This album should firmly establish Evans as one to watch.
Superb cd!
I have had this cd for two days and already it is my all-time favorite. It has a perfect mix of ballads and up-tempo songs. Sara Evan's voice is unbelievably soothing. It contains a wonderful remake of the song "Just a Little Kiss" by Bruce Hornsby who performs the song with her on this cd. All of her songs on this cd are superb. I highly recommend this cd for country music fans!
Must Have
I've always thought Sara Evans was an excellent singer, but just pair her up with this set of excellent songs and she demonstrates she was definately "Born to Fly". This is one of the best CD's I've purchased in a while and I'm an avid collector of all types of music. It' so hard to pick a favorite song because they are all so good. I just bought this today and have listened to it three times all the way through without stopping. I recommend this to anyone and predict lots of sales. I rate it #1
