Late discovery is better than no discovery!
I have listened to this CD at a friends' and although I knew Mrs. Gencer since my childhood -I am 60 now- I was ashamed that I don't have any recordings of her in my collection! I believe she is one of the greatest sopranos of 20th century, both in voice and interpretation.
drop dead gorgeous
Ms .Gencer was a superlative singer who in my opinion rivaled Callas. NO, I never saw her on stage but it is through her scarce recordings that I learned of her great talent. She was not an international star of the stupendous kind. She replaced Callas in many roles. She was riveting. You will be glued to your seat if you know what exciting singing is all about.
The Fabulous Gencer upholding the Arangi-Lombardi tradition!
I have only an introduction to Leyla Gencer via her wonderful live performances which never fail to capture and elevate the drama. Her dramatic eccentricities lend themselves to an artist much concerned with communicating great human experiences, therefore, in her own words there may emerge "some unorthodox notes" which occur in the form of gulps, glottal clicks, interesting scoops and some incredibly forceful accenti. Perhaps, that is why I enjoy her so much! She is unique. You will not find "l'aqua e sappone" (soap and water) here, again in her own words.
As for her voice, it is beautiful most of the time with stunning high soft notes, they are truly soft in tone and volume. She may not rival her great teacher's perfection of line and dimenuendi, but her teacher could not match her itensity and dramatics. Yet, as an admirer of both artists, I would suspect the great, late, Giannina Arangi-Lombardi would be proud of her equally great pupil Leyla Gencer!
