Country music Christmas albums are often the biggest offenders of the holiday music formula: load in the maudlin, the mawkish, the over-produced, string-ridden tracks to make sure everybody knows how reverent they view the season and how important that marshmallow sentiment is this time of year. But the result is often just the opposite for discriminating listeners: after so many of these artists milk the treacle machine, nobody sounds genuine anymore and that rarefied Christmas sentiment is buried beneath layers and layers of pretty paper. That said, A Country Superstar Christmas III, featuring veterans such as Alan Jackson, George Strait, Alabama, and Reba McEntire along with up-and-comers such as Alecia Elliott, Chely Wright, and Mark Wills, fares pretty well. Toby Keith's "Christmas Rock" has some funny twists on an old rite, George Strait takes a new look at "Christmas Cookies," and only Vince Gill seems really lost in the reverence realm with a very stately reading of "O Come All Ye Faithful." Mostly standards, but very enjoyable
The first Country superstar Christmas contained a balanced mix of standards and originals, while the second was filled mostly with originals. This third volume is dominated by standards, but they are very well done.

There are only four originals here - the tracks by George Strait, Mark Wills, Alabama and Toby Keith, and they are all wonderful, although some of them can be found on Christmas albums by the individual singers.

Alan Jackson opens the set with a cover of Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas and Reba closes it with her traditional country version of Silent night. In between, there are many fine performances, including Alecia Elliott singing a lovely version of What child is this.

There is no filler here - it's all great stuff. While this volume is less interesting than Volume 2 to Christmas music fans like me, it may be more suitable for the casual buyer looking for plenty of Christmas standards.

Christmas Cookies
I bought this CD for a family member so I have not personally listened to it. She wanted it for her husband for only one song, "Christmas Cookies" by George Strait. I was told that it is a very good CD. Sorry, that is all the feedback I can offer.
