A Forgotten Vocalist
The Big Band era had so many talented singers, and yet so many of them vanished after the era was over (around 1946). Ginny Simms was certainly one of them, having sung with Kay Kyser for years and then moving out on her own. To me, Ginny had a voice similiar to Dinah Shore, only higher, and her recordings are very hard to come by. Therefore, when I saw this new CD from Jasmine Records, I jumped at the opportunity to have more songs by her.
If you are a fan of Ginny Simms, then this CD would probably be a good addition. However, unlike most of Jasmine's issues, this disc is not flawless. The CD combines Ginny's radio appearances with movie soundtracks. The radio remotes are very well recorded, but the recordings taken directly off of the soundtracks are of poor quality and sound "bland". There should be more proof readers at Jasmine as well, because one of the movie soundtracks is Ginny Simms singing "You're The Top" with Cary Grant, but Grant is billed in the linear notes as "Gary Grant". Of course, that is a minor complaint, but hey it is Cary Grant!
As I said, the CD as a whole is worthwhile. There are better Ginny Simms CDs out there, but anything dealing with Ginny Simms is better than nothing at all. She is a forgotten big band vocalist that doesn't deserve to be forgotten...
Great Ginny
This album reveals the beautiful voice of Ginny Simms in a variety of settings. The sound is excellent on almost all of the selections. A must for fans of the big band era and early radio. Imagine an era in which popular singers could really sing!
