A good Andrew Lau movie
BOB starts out like an action movie, but it's really a drama. There are a lot of cool explosions at the start and many cops in the SDU unit are dying. They decide to make a new special unit called the BOB: Best of the Best. About 20 recruits go to training and the movie is mainly about their experiences and relationships. One man is against another in the group because of family problems, and the other person doesn't even know what the problem is. Karen Mok is a teacher who falls a love. Blacky Ko plays a cook who is a former SDU member and nicknamed Single Ball. Him and his son were definitely my favorite characters.
The story is very good, and deep, and I liked how it isn't corny at all. The comedy isn't fall out of your chair funny, but well done. Looking at the DVD cover it seems like just another pop star movie, but it is actually pretty good. The directing job by Andrew Lau is outstanding. I went into this expecting an action flick, and I am surprised to say I liked it anyway. 3.5/5
The DVD from City Laser and Video has very good picture quality and is presented in a 16:9 widescreen format. The subtitles are burnt onto the picture and can be hard to read at times, but not too distracting.
