Sugar Minott fans rejoice
Rare Gems is a wonderful collection of tracks from 1979 to 1986 that were mostly heard only in Jamaica.

I was very excited to hear tracks from Sugar Minott that I had never heard before. This CD does not disappoint. The songs run the gamut here...from sweet and enchanting songs like "Tears You Cry" to delving into electronic riddim riding in "Chant." This is really great stuff.

I appreciate that the songs were released without a lot of digital manipulation - the tracks maintain that lovely 70's organic, natural sound quality. There is some rawness, but that adds to the overall feeling that you're hearing some rare stuff here.

Truly rare stuff.
These tracks were heretofore unavailable and apparently not recorded on lps or cds. These are definitely from his most creative period when reggae was soul- or roots-based --- before synthesizers and dancehall posturing began to dominate. On this compilation he excels in both those two categories: soul and roots.
Lots of heartfelt vocals that are propelled by the mighty rhythms and super-catchy hooks.
