Beau Jocque is the stage name of Andrus Espre, a giant of a man who added funk bass, Peter Frampton-style talk-box guitar, and the occasional drum loop to the down-home sound of zydeco in the 1990s and became one of the genre's biggest stars. The Best of Beau Jocque selects 13 tracks from his seven Rounder releases, including originals like "Give Him Cornbread," his biggest hit (which has since become a zydeco standard); "Damballah," a percussive romp named for a voodoo deity; and "Richard's Club," a hard-driving ode to a favorite hangout. Beau Jocque has a deep, rumbling voice that recalls Howlin' Wolf and an infectious danceable accordion style inspired by Boozoo Chavis, but his canny blend of funk, soul, rock, reggae, and zydeco is all his own. Unfortunately, Beau Jocque died of a heart attack in 1999, but his spirit lives on in these recordings, and perhaps more importantly, in the countless zydeco bands that continue to play his songs. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews
Best of Beau Jocque is a real treat!!
Listening to this CD will remind you just how great Beau Jocque was. All Beau Jocque fans have their favorite songs and most are on this CD. The last 2 songs on the CD are never released live versions of "Just One Kiss" and "Do It All Night" that end the CD on a great high. If those 2 songs had been sold by themselves I would have still purchased the CD because they are so good. "Just One Kiss" could easily be played on any radio station. All the musical influences on Beau Jocque are so evedent in this collection. From War to Boozoo Chavis,ZZ Top to Archie Bell. If you ever wondered what good Zydeco music should sound like get this CD. Beau Jocque fans, this CD was made for us. Beau Jocque shouts out at one point on the CD "Was that alright ???". [You bet], Beau Jocque.
Live and all of his CD's
I have seen Beau Jocque in El'Sids in Lafayette, Richard's Club in Big Mammoo, The festival and at Brew and Bowl in New Orleans and miss him greatly. All of his music makes my body dance and my heart sing. Beau Jocque was Zydeco.
The Godfather of Zydeco
Beau Jocque is the undisputed King of Zydeco. Buckwheat Zydeco and Wayne Toups owe their fortune to this pioneer. Although Beau was before my time, we all must give him props for bringing the Zydedco sound to the forefront of the Cajun music scene. I rank Beau along with Clifton Chenier-as well as the Balfour Brothers-as the absolute pioneers of Cajun/Zydeco music.
He and his band will be missed but the music will stand the test of time...IIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEE!
