Customer Reviews
Excellent, But Still Lacking
There are great songs on this album, with my favorites being from the Austin years and "Blue Sky..." . But I wholeheartedly agree that this cannot be an "ultimate" collection without "South Canadian River Song" or "Alleys of Austin", both great songs which defined the early years for this performer. It's certainly worth having, but you'll still need a vinyl copy of the original Cosmic Cowboy album.
Ultimate?
How can this be the "Ultimate Collection" of Michael Murphey without "South Canadian River Song"? Or "Alleys of Austin" and "Blessing in Disguise"? Thank goodness "Geronimo's Cadillac" and "Boy from the Country" made it on the album. Why isn't "Cosmic Cowboy Souvenir" available? It's a great album that deserves to be available for those who have not had the pleasure of hearing heartfelt music from one of Austin's best.
This is one of the best MMM possible...but it could be even
The songs that were chosen for this album were fantastic. Each one - especially the old ones - could be played today to show songwriters how to really write songs. And MMM's voice and abilities means he can do all styles and do them well. Any fan of MMM - early or late - will love this album.
But I do agree with the reviewer on this page who said 'how could this be the ultimate collection?'. There are too many great MMM songs NOT on this album...like 'South Canadian River Song' or my all-time favorite 'Tonight We Ride' (best song I've EVER heard - words and music sizzle) or a gospelly song like 'Lights of the City'.
So this album needs to be 2 disks in order to really be the ultimate...butit is the closetest thing to it that you can find!
