Editorial Reviews

This stunning four-CD collection is a great companion to Quincy Jones's excellent autobiography. It's also a great compilation of his eclectic genius, which has touched everyone from bebopper Clifford Brown to hip-hop rapper Ice-T. The Grammy Award-winning composer-producer has something for everybody here. His jazz sides include his first recorded trumpet solo on "Kingfish" (with the great vibraphonist Lionel Hampton). There's also his swinging composition "Stockholm Sweetnin'" and his hip arrangements for Peggy Lee, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, and Miles Davis. Film buffs will love Jones's swinging soundtrack music, including the Latin lilt of "Soul Bossa Nova" from Austin Powers, the gritty vocals of Ray Charles on "In the Heat of the Night," the bluesy "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)" from The Color Purple, and the hilarious "Sanford & Son Theme (The Street Beater)." Then, there's Michael Jackson's megahit, "Thriller," Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," and some long-lost gems, like the Brothers Johnson's immortal rendition of Shuggie Otis's spacey classic, "Strawberry Letter 23," Lesley Gore's bubblegum tune, "You Don't Own Me," and the all-star track, "We Are the World." Jones's best work as a solo artist includes his slick renditions of Benny Golson's "Killer Joe," Herbie Hancock's lush "Tell Me a Bedtime Story," and the rarely heard ballad "Everything Must Change." This collection summarizes Quincy Jones's brilliant career, and it showcases the some of the best of our musical heritage. --Eugene Holley Jr.

The Dude Throws Down5
This is the title of the 4th in the 4 CD in the boxed set - a chronicle of music from 1953 onwards. His talent is intensely felt from track 1, CD 1......and doesn't let up! At 23 Q was recognised by Gillespie as talented .. and on this set you hear the best. I spent my Thanksgiving day cooking & listening and you can be sure of giving a life long wonderful gift - to yourself or anyone from 14 to 94. The only question you will have about this set is how did you miss this concentrated genius spreading his energy. Jazz, hip hop and musical scores and so much more- Heat of the Night to Austin Powers- Bossa Nova TV shows- Ironside; Frank Sinatra, Bono, Michael Jackson and Hampton. And you wonder why my husband and 5 sons said the dinner was the best? This set has a most reasonable price and well worth at least twice as much - Thank-you QJ.

Incredible collection of music history5
Jones's musical biography is a history of American music. The variety and depth of the music compiled on these CDs is amazing.

Such a wonderful collection of the best music5
I had no idea who Quincy Jones really was until I watched a PBS special the other night called American Masters. I am a big fan of his album "Big Band Bossa Nova" and I was amazed to see that he did a great deal of big-band styled music. This box set encompasses so many different aspects of his career. Big band music, movie & television scores, to producing some of pop music's greatest stars. I am extremely pleased with this purchase. There are so many great songs on these 4 discs they will be in heavy rotation on my MP3 player for quite some time.
