glorious
This is the stuff. I always had thought that no-one could touch Leontyne Price - until I heard this. It's different of course but Gencer conveys such frailty and her 4th act is epic. This is a studio recording of the RAI film 1957. Del Monaco is his usual self - explosive and unsubtle - but great. Barbieri demonstrates why she is still considered to "the" Azucena and Bastianini is broody and delivers. There is a libretto but no english translation and the added bonus are highlights from La Forza in Koln of the same year - again incredible! Gencer really is the star here.
Splendid golden era
I have VHS version of this RAI telecast from 1957, the sound quality wasn't so well but how wonderful these singers were.
Trovatore is a masterpiece and there are many recordings out there but you can't ask better cast than this. Equal to the one with Salzburg live in 1960. We're very blessed to have various recordings of Ettore Bastianini as Count di Luna. The best and uncomparable. These golden era singers will live with us forever.
An extraordinary performance.
A dear old friend who was able to hear many of these greats in person wrote of this 1957 performance: "The singing and dramatic impetus of the cast is phenomenal. Del Monaco is much better than on his commercial set, singing with wider dynamic range, greater variety of color and phrasing, and amazingly accurate 16th notes in "Di quella pira." And he hits a high D-Flat (or C-Sharp - I don't have a score to know which it is) at the end of Act 1, with Gencer, that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Gencer is idiosyncratic, but lovely and deeply involved, with pianissimi equalled only by Milanov in this role. Everyone, in fact, was "hot" on this occasion -- and while the mono sound and old-fashioned cuts might make this less than a single recommended version, it is hard to imagine a true Trovatore-lover not enjoying this performance immensely."
