Album Description
Thin Lizzy was a hard rock quartet formed by Philip Lynott out of Dublin, Ireland that had numerous charting albums throughout the 70's & 80s. Wounded Bird will be re-issuing five of those albums on Cd. Thunder & Lightning was originally issued in 1983. Featured is guitarist John Sykes.

Four and one-half stars
By the time the mighty Thin Lizzy machine was beginning to grind to a halt Phil Lynott decide to inject new blood in the band once more and roll the dice. Insert John Sykes to the two-headed monster of guitarist Scott Gorham and whoever Lizzy got to play axe with him. The swan song from the band delivers like a white-hot burning pile of anvils. The title track will want to make even the most calm individual break a pool que over someone nearby's head at the sheer intensity and voracity of the production. After that the band delivers a collection of well made hard rock and roll. There is no filler on this release and each song is unique unto itself and a credit to the often maligned genre. In the meantime, Gorham's heavy vibrato-laden melodic solos hit even harder as Sykes extraordinary blistering technique pushes Gorham's work completely out of the envelope. The wonderful Lynott vocal melodies are hard at work here as well, bringing unexpected hooks to songs such as "This is the One" "Bad Habits" "Sun Goes Down" and "Baby Please don't go". This was the perfect album for the band to leave as it's final piece of work. It puts a final head-banging stamp on what is arguably the best body of work ever achieved by a band in its genre.
Phil Lynott in all his glory
Thunder & Lightning is my favorite Thin Lizzy album and one of my all-time favorites. Phil Lynott's vocals are tremendous! And Jon and Scott on guitars . . . Ah! Buy this CD! It's VERY difficult to find in record stores and I applaud Amazon.com for making it available!!
THIS IS THE ONE
My copy is actually the Warner Bros/Metal Blade original release, but it's all good. This CD features John Sykes as the 2nd guitarist alongside of Scott Gorham. There is also Darren Wharton on keyboards. Of course there is Phil Lynott and Brian Downey on bass and drums, respectively. If I had to rate all of the Thin Lizzy albums this would rank 3rd, behind BAD REPUTATION and JAILBREAK.
Versatility is always a factor with Thin Lizzy and THUNDER & LIGHTNING is no different. There is hard rock ("Cold Sweat"), ballads ("the Sun Goes Down"), blues/rock ("Baby Please Don't Go), and more. Two of my biggest Lizzy favorites are here "the Holy War" and "Bad Habits". This is another of those Thin Lizzy albums where the only weakness is the music ends far too soon. "This Is the One" and "Heart Attack" are very good listening. This is one of those discs that goes well in a multidisc player in your car, where every song counts.
Once again the group proves it doesn't matter who the second guitarist is, because the music is going to jam. Sykes holds up the tradition of Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White, and Midge Ure, showcasing two extremely talented guitarists. You won't get a cold sweat from THUNDER & LIGHTNING because there is no gamble in the greatness of this CD.
