The Gentle End of the World
It took me a while to warm up to this exceptionally haunting disc, but I've come to love it. The music is provocative, VERY unusual and a mystery. What WAS it? A processional, an ecclesiastical drama, a pseudo-sermon? Jordi Savall has a marvelous ability to embellish and arrange music, and this series of works, translated into various local dialects, seem all to be related to the Cantiga "La Madre de Deus" and all depict the end of the world. The scary text speaks of hellfire and damnation and the need to repent NOW. (Brings shudders to the spine as a possible accompaniment to an Auto-da-Fe!) Getting past this, it is hypnotic, performed with incredible virtuosity by Monserrat Figueras and the group, and can be listened to over and over again. Reviewers have called this one of the greatest Early Music discs, and I would heartily agree.
