Product Description

"Bone to Be Wild": While hiding in an asteroid field from Crais' Command Carrier, Moya picks up an urgent distress call. As Aeryn stays on board to help the Leviathan bond with her newborn, Crichton, Zhaan, and D'Argo answer the call in hopes of finding charts that will steer them through the field. But the garden-like asteroid from where the distress signal originated holds only two inhabitants. One is a feral female; the other, a massive plant-like male. When each proclaim the other is a ruthless killer, Crichton, Zhaan, and D'Argo are forced between the two aliens--a place that makes them easy prey for one... or both!

"Family Ties": When the crew fails to evade the pursuing Peacekeepers, one of Moya's own steals a transport and flees to the Command Carrier to betray the others in exchange for his own life! To deal with the treachery, Crichton devises a dangerous, possibly fatal mission that places them all in jeopardy. But the traitor finds a surprising collaborator on the enemy ship--one who will change the crew's destiny forever. Discover the nerve-shattering cliffhanger that had critics on the edge of their seats and fans screaming for more!

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The two episodes (numbers 21 and 22) contained in this, the 11th and final volume from Farscape's first season, carry on with the series' entertaining brew of drama, humor, superior production values, credible special effects, and, perhaps best of all, the clever commingling of human and humanoid characters with puppets designed by the Jim Henson Company. Episode 22, "Family Ties," ends with a cliffhanger guaranteed to bring viewers back for more, as the duplicitous Rygel plans to turn traitor, which eventually leaves the fates of Crichton (Ben Browder) and D'Argo (Anthony Simcoe) up for grabs and "living spaceship" Moya's young offspring under the control of the conflicted villain Crais, among other developments. Television viewers already know how it all turns out, as the third season completed its run in April 2002. The rest of us, however, must be content to wait until subsequent Farscape seasons are issued for the home video market. --Sam Graham

Additional features
The DVD surely has enough extra material to satisfy even the most ardent fans, including audio commentary by actors Anthony Simcoe (on Episode 21) and Ben Browder and Claudia Black (both on Episode 22); "video profiles" of series creator Rockne O'Bannon and executive producer David Kemper, each with extensive footage from the show; and an amusing look at the Jim Henson Creature Shop in Australia, where Farscape is filmed. Navigating the menu, however, may prove a bit cumbersome and annoying for some users. --Sam Graham

Great climax for season 1 Finale5
This DVD marks the end of season one and these two episodes are indicative of this great series. "Bone to be wild" is a good who do you trust episode. The crew while hiding in an asteroid field to avoid Crais and Scorpious are hailed by an unknown alien. Once meeting this alien they find that a creature is preying upon them as they find remains of previous victims. They are attacked by another plant like creature who is more than he seems. They find out that they only have a short time before the creature attacks again but who are they going to trust?
"Family Ties" sees Rygel up to his old tricks in trying to sell out his comrades to save his own green hide. But with Crais under arrest and Scorpious in charge he knows he has much of a chance to cut a good deal. He instead makes a deal with Crais and comes back to Moya with him. So Crichton is faced with one of his nemises, will he overcome the urge to take revenge? It ends with a great cliffhanger in this season finale. Look out for this one if you are a farscape fan or someone who enjoys a good drama and great acting, sci-fi or no. Enjoy:)

Excellent show. DVDs lacking.1
I'll say at the onset that Farscape is an excellent show. If you're reading this, you probably agree. Sadly, the DVDs are not at all the positive experience I wish them to be.

First, the cost of a single DVD containing two episodes is annoyingly high....Compare this to Star Trek:The Next Generation at slightly over half the price and the Farscape series seems insultingly expensive.

Second, unlike many series being released on DVD, Farscape is being released two episodes at a time, months apart....Call me cynical, but I'm betting that after hoardes of us purchase Season 1 a single DVD at at time, they're going to release a Season 1 boxed set at a much lower price.

Third, while I haven't made the comparisons myself, I'm hearing reports that the supplemental material on the DVDs is diminishing in quantity and quality. If true, this only serves to turn me away from further Farscape DVD purchases.

Lastly, the navigation on the DVDs seems to have been poorly designed. Navigating to the second episode on a DVD requires the user to choose Scene Selection and awkwardly select the second episode. A much cleaner user interface would be to have an icon on the main screen for each episode on the disk.

In summary, while the show is excellent, the DVD experience is quite lacking due to the cost, slow release, diminishing supplemental material, and poor navigation.

Season Finale Triumph5
Family Ties is such a strong episode that I have ignored its unfortunate pairing with Bone to be Wild (an episode of little consequence and terrible storyline placement) and given this a 5 star rating. Family Ties is everything a season finale should be -- enemies old and new, each character coming fully into their own, Farscape's typical wit mixed with the most poignant moments to date, and of course a cliffhanger that makes you glad the SciFi channel is goofy enough to air the final four episodes right before the beginning of the new season so you don't have to agonize too long. These actors can handle anything with style, and Family Ties is one of the most stylish episodes from any season.
