They may be every parent's nightmare, but the rap all-stars that comprise the 2000 Up in Smoke tour (smoke, as in blunts and chronic--or marijuana, for the uninitiated) are incredibly popular with a surprising cross-section of young music lovers today. This two-hour-plus DVD captures most of one concert by the four rappers who joined together for this tour: Ice Cube, Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg. If you aren't a fan of the music, don't expect this to change your mind or even to help you understand these rappers' appeal. For the devoted, however, you get heaping doses of four of the hottest acts working, in a show that includes lavish production values as well as plenty of backstage footage and photographs as extra features. Given the slice-and-dice editing (no shot, it seems, is allowed to last more than two seconds), it's hard to get a fix on them or a true picture of what the show looked like if you happened to be sitting in the audience. --Marshall Fine

Great Concert
This was the most succeceful tour in hip-hop history, now even I know why. This DVD features the 2 hour concert with behind the sceans intermission sequances. There is also about 30 minutes worth of other behind the sceans extra stuff. If you are a fan of Snoop Dogg and/or Dr. Dre, you must get this DVD, If you are an Ice Cube fan, but not a big Dre/Snoop fan, you may be somewhat dissapointed because Ice Cube gets less attension in this concert than others. If you are an Eminem fan, and ONLY like songs like "The Real Slim Shady", don't buy this, youll hate it. In other words, Snoop and Dre get the most attension on this video, and if you are a fan of them, youll love this concert. One last thing, on a parental rating system, I would rate this NC-17, so if you are easily offended, dont buy this DVD. The reason why I rated it 5-stars, is because I loved this show, and for under 20 bucks, its a great bargain.
Still Smoking
If you was one of the unlucky ones that couldnt get tickets to one of the hottest rap tours ever, This DVD is the next best thing.. It puts you in the front row to one of the most exciting one of the most elaborate stage shows ever staged.. The DVD takes you on a 2 hour musical experience unlike no other you would witness in any genre of music.. The DVD also includes some behind the scene with the artists to give it that close and personal feel .. The Sound and picture quality is superb.. The Concert was film in Boston, Mass but there as other footage from other cities on the tour dealing with talkin with fans, People that work behind the scene during the tour etc.. All n All gives you a very in-depth look of the tour and what goes on behind the lights and music.. Highlites of the DVD Dr. Dre/ Snoop and Eminem.. Ice Cube portion of the DVD is also pretty good .. If there is a minor criticism to this DVD it would be that some of the performances were shortening.. But nevertheless if you are a fan of Dre, Snoop, Eminem, Ice Cube this is the DVD to get.. If you were lucky enough to attend the show you want to relive the excitement get this DVD you will not be disappointed
Excellent, albeit with a little room for improvement...
Let me start by saying that I'm not generally a big fan of concert DVDs. Their sound tends to be unspectacular, even in DD5.1 or DTS, and the performances quite simply drag on -- they are not edited tightly enough for my MTV-honed tastes.
This DVD, insofar as it compares to other concert discs, is phenomenal. I was unfortunately out of the country during the Up In Smoke tour, so I'm not sure how it compares to the real thing, but I am, needless to say, very happy with the DVD. Dolby Digital surround is utilized on this disc to its fullest potential -- a rarity indeed amongst concert DVDs. The mains and center typically handle all the vocals and instrumentation, while the surrounds handle crowd noise, as well as the occasional vocal effect or turntable manouver by the DJ; while the effect is more than a bit artificial at times, it's a lot of fun, and generally not overused.
The concert footage appears to have been filmed mainly in 35mm, with bits of video spliced in here and there. The picture is widescreen, which is another rarity amongst concert discs, albeit non-anamorphic. Editing is extremely tight -- you can tell a music video director (namely, Philip Atwell) put this together. Lots of angles are utilized (they must have been running 8+ cameras on stage at times) and wide and crowd shots are used very effectively. Diversions from the main concert program are brief and well-suited. While the programming on this disc clearly does not include the entire tour set, all the key performances from Ice Cube, Eminem, Dr. Dre, and Snoop Dogg are here.
My only major beefs with the disc are 1. that the image is non-anamorphic (meaning in laymen's terms that it looks like crap on a widescreen TV) and 2. that a DTS soundtrack wasn't included. Given the wonderful job done with the Dolby Digital track, the DVD might really have benefited from DTS.
It's a testament to the overall quality of this DVD that I've given it 5 stars despite the aforementioned shortcomings.
