Customer Reviews
So much cool feeling in these songs and sound quality is decent as well
I don't know what kind of player the other reviewer was using, but mine plays loud and crystal clear. Mine is just going through TV speakers as well - I can't imagine what it'd sound like with the real speaker set-up it was designed for, but for what I'm using, this is one of my better DVD audio discs (and I've got over 30, some of varying quality - this one is definitely in the class of better sound recording, no question). Sound quality-wise perhaps the better of the two albums included here is Can I Have My Money Back. With the Humblebums sometimes maybe the sound goes a little thin occasionally, though the album is softer than the first one to begin with - I haven't compared it against the straight stereo experience though.
As for the content - wow! Where have I been? Gerry Rafferty is excellent. I keep listening to this cd, and truthfully it would be hard for me to choose which of the two albums included here I like better - The New Humblebums is slightly mellower - "Her Father Didn't Like Me Anyway" is one of my favorites. "Can I have my Money Back", the first 12 songs, is more rock n roll and is great song after great song - not a bad one in the bunch. But you could say that about all the songs on this dvd-audio.
As usual, DVD-Audio keeps everything on disc - ten pages of liner notes that you access on the menu page, a short 'scrapbook', etc.. If I had the cash and the know-how I'd invest in the real set-up but for now I'm doing ok with this excellent album on my new TV speakers. ;)
Good tunes, odd recording
First, don't assume you can play this back on your computer, because the copy protection will get in the way and make the sound simply awful. Think back to the old VHS copy protection where the screen and volume would go up and down wildly, and you've nailed it. I was very disappointed that an original DVD chosen for its higher audio quality would act this way. It had to be played from a cheap hardware DVD player, and then the audio sounded a bit funny since I don't have 5.1 stereo. It's probably great if you have a surround-sound setup; otherwise, pass on to the regular CDs. Also, the music has been remastered and in some cases changed more than one might think, sometimes for the better, and equally often for the worse. I never thought I'd say this, but I recommend getting the "lower quality" CD - it'll sound better.
