Worthwhile purchase for Tosh/Reggae fans
Peter Tosh's "Captured Live" show at the Roxy in L.A. is one of the best performances in reggae, hands up.
Even though this DVD only has a handful of the songs he performed that night (check out the "Complete Captured Live" on CD for the whole show), Tosh and reggae are missing a lot if they surpass this DVD.
Tosh delivered one of his best shows. This performance and his "One Love Peace Concert" one (which is also on CD) stand as his best moments on stage.
On "Captured Live," his rendering of "Rastafari Is" is incredible. The CD has the full, 11-plus minute version (hopefully, the DVD will also have the full version). Words simply cannot describe. But Tosh almost never sounds better than he does here. He speaks with great authority, sings with passion and bangs on the congo drums as if he'll never stop. On some of Tosh's other concerts on CD, unfortunately, he surprisingly lacks some fire. "Equal Rights/Downpresser Man" always manages to move me. You just don't hear his words, you feel them sink into your very being.
I know I sound like some fan gushing about the latest Britney Spears album. But know this, there was a time when a writer, a fan, would go at length in praise of a concert or album, he/she was speaking the honest, heartfelt truth. Nowadays, it seems everyone gives his favorite artist 5 stars for whatever they put out without discerning between good, bad, mediocre and poor.
Buy this and you will see that it truly lives up to a 4-star. There have been very few, if any, artists with the passion and devotion that Tosh had. Don't miss out.
The man itself!!!!
I saw Peter Tosh in this tour while I was studying in New Orleans (Sept. 1983), I am not sure if it was just before or after this show was taped. Well, unfortunatly we can not see him anymore, but this DVD captures the escence of this great show. Great performance by PT and the band, specially Santa Davis (drums) and Fully Fulwood (bass). If you like reggae or if you like to see a good show, just go ahead an get this DVD, you will not regret it. A gret show from one of reggea prime musician. I only gave it four stars because the DVD has only part of the performance, for full concert please check the double CD Captured Live.
The Roots Reggae Ambassador at his Best!
This concert is a powerful one hour showcasing the many talents of the Roots Reggae Ambassador Peter Tosh. The way he commanded the stage (check out his african garb and arab scarf on his head with mirror tint glasses) is worth the purchase alone. The band does an amazing job particularly Santa Davis on drums and Vision on percussion. Despite the dominant white audiance, Peter never succombs to performing pop records. His song selection is strictly roots and rebellious. Even the poppy "Johnny B. Goode" chronicals his life growing up on the tiny island of Jamaica. One reviewer wrote the audiance looked bored. That is absolutely not the case. Nearly everybody is standing up throughout the entire performance cheering non stop. Some stand out performances are "Pick myself up," "Rastafari Is (check out his congo performance w/ Vision, brilliant)," and "Not going to Give it up (he reveals the dreadlocks to a roaring ovation)." Peter was a masterful musician, songwriter, performer, and political activist. His performances was his ultimate platform to reveal his most inner thoughts and beliefs to the world. Peter Tosh lived and died through his music. "Captured Live" did indeed do just that, capture his life.
