Editorial Reviews

Album Description
Boogie woogie became an international craze through the work of giants like Albert Ammons, Jimmy Yancy, Pete Johnston & Meade Lux Lewis. By the end of World War II the boogie craze had died down but it's fire was rekindled by white performers in the form of country boogie, here is the story of the hillbilly boogie boys. Just some of the legendary characters on this 100 track set are, Spade Cooley, The Delmore Brothers, Chet Atkins, Hank Snow, Merle Travis, The Maddox Brothers & Tennessee Ernie Ford. Includes 60 page illustrated booklet. Four standard jewel cases housed in a slip-box. Proper. 2002.

Another night in with the Boogie Box5
Given the option, would I prefer to get a boyfriend...or another Proper Box Set? High quality, reliable, consistant, great price, nice to look at AND listen to, the PBS wins hands down. And beyond that, Hillbilly Boogie is just about my all-time fave. You'll prefer some tracks, but the amazing thing about this 4CD set is that at no stage will you need to rush over and hit the FFWD button (despite it being such a large compilation selected by some complete stranger). All tracks are upbeat with no soppy ballady crud...great for bopping.

If you're coming to this through a love of 1950s rockabilly or rock 'n' roll, or some teddy boy crush on Tennessee Ernie Ford...you will not be disappointed. Step back a few years (recordings are mainly from 1946-1951, with a couple earlier) and see these genres at sapling stage. The sound quality is perfect...not noisy, but retaining that raw old sound. You'll fall in love!

The Evolution Of Western Swing5
This excellent box set from Proper contains some of the best "country" boogie you'll ever hear.
This set clearly demonstrates the evolution of Western Swing into what would later be called Rockabilly.
These are the original recordings and while most of them sound great, there is some distortion on several tracks.
Don't let the fact you never heard of most of these artists or songs deter you from buying this set - it's toe-tapping boogie at its best!

The missing link5
This is the missing link between Western Swing and Rockabilly. Don't pass this up because of the silly title or the groups you've never heard of. Sure, a lot of it sounds the same after a while, but that's because it all kicks.
