Shurik, a naive student of the rites and traditions of the Caucas region of the Soviet Union, falls in love with Nina, "a Komsomol member, an athlete, an activist, and just a beauty," who is "kidnapped Caucasian style" with a bit of his help to be forced to marry a senior local official. But as soon as Shurik finds out what is actually going on, he bravely rushes to the rescue in this madcap comedy.

Light, clever, semi-slapstick
Typical of Gaidays' work, this film delivers pure, lighthearted fun. Even the bad guys get the laughs and the viewers sympathy (pity?). The script is loaded with good one liners, and even the ones that refer to Soviet era life situations are well understood by most westerners. The acting is easy and well done. Even the subtitles are pretty fine. It's more like slapstick with a plot, but if you really hate that type of comedy, stay away from Leonids' films. On the other hand, if this type of film appeals to you, you are in for a treat.

Simply Classic!
This movie is just so great. It's witty, funny, clever, and full of classic characters. Even my husband, who doesn't speak any Russian found this one hilariuos. The translation in the subtitles truly showed the movie's meaning. Although, it is hard to translate a truly Georgian Accent!

warm and wonderful
A warm and sunny Russian film by the very unknown (in the west)Leonid Gaidai, possibly Russia's greatest director of comedy. Very funny situations throughout and villains so comical you almost root for them. One of many Soviet non-propaganda films that should be better known in the west. Get it and laugh.
