Editorial Reviews
Album Description
This box set gives 103 reasons for the continuous adulation. Spanning 1934-1952 we include legendary sessions with Coleman Hawkins' all star jam band, Bill Coleman and his orchestra, his involvement with The Glenn Miller all stars and of course many with Stephane Grappelli with and without the Quintette. Django was an improviser of genius, the art of spontaneous music making was and why he was and why he is such a huge influence of all guitarists playing whatever style. Budget priced 4 CD set includes four standard jewel cases housed in cardboard slipbox, plus a 44 page illustrated booklet. Proper. 2003.
Customer Reviews
Eighteen years of Django's best
This four-CD boxed set features 103 of guitarist Django Reinhardt's best tunes from 1934 to 1952, plus a photo-filled 44-page booklet. From his days with violinist Stephane Grappelli and the Quintette du Hot Club de France, Reinhardt went on to play with jazz legends like Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, Bill Coleman, Rex Stewart, Barney Bigard, Peanuts Hucko, Mel Powell and Ray McKinley. They all appear in this package, the 53rd in a series from Proper Records of England. More than 50 years after Reinhardt's death, many cities (including Tucson, where I live) still have their own "Hot Club" combos, carrying on the gypsy guitarist's legacy.
