Keeping the audience satisfied and wanting more
This is a really great listen! The group plays with energy, finesse and inventiveness. The new tunes by Brookmeyer, written, amazingly, in the hotel room the night before, are particularly engaging, and Stephans and Warrington keep things swinging. Koonse is always a subtle and melodic guitarist. There are a lot of different kinds of jazz out there, and this CD ought to rank high among them.
Artistry Meets Craftsmanship
Here again is the sometimes sparkling, sometimes subtle, always engaging fare we have come to expect from these four. This is music that is intellectually engaging, harmonically intriguing, melodicaly dazzling, and still swingin'. Among the many elements that make this session such a compleat experience is the carefully designed introductions for the pieces, that set the stage and showcase the motives. Then the listener has the delightful task of tracing these elements through the selection.
