This is the near-legendary video that started the trend of songs for kids on video in 1986. The footage of kids playing in houses and backyards has a delightful homemade quality and is anchored by the songs of Hap Palmer, once dubbed the "Bob Dylan of the diaper set." His songs do have a nice folksiness that is just right. From the very first song, "Piggy Toes," you can see where the video is aimed: the Sesame Street group of infants to 6-year-olds. Palmer has a gift for writing bouncy numbers that go beyond the normal subject matter. "My Mommy Comes Back" speaks to kids who are left at Grandma's or a day care center ("my mommy comes back, she always comes back..."). Other songs on the 30-minute tape include "Shout & Whisper," "Rolling," and the self-explanatory "Today I Took My Diapers Off." --Doug Thomas
From Parents' Choice®
The first and finest volume in a now-famous series shows babies' and toddlers' lives; they eat, they sleep, they play endearingly while the production tickles the funny bones of youngsters and parents. Volume I is a smart combination of animation, puppetry and live action. Gentle in the tone and color, it spills over with joy, truth and laughter. Here first appears the unforgettable coming of age baby song of the ages, "The Day I Took My Diapers Off." A Parents' Choice Approval. (Diana Huss Green, Parents' Choice, 1999)

BOTTOM LINE: 2 GREAT KIDS VIDEO ON 1 DVD = TERRIFIC CHOICE!
Catching and compelling, you and your kids will enjoy these silly, fun tunes more each time you hear them. This DVD is definitely the way to go, as we wore out our VHS copies several times over the past 18 years. Also, you may be able to find this DVD which contains 2 videos in the $5. bin a Wal-Mart and Target.
One tip, if you want this DVD to last, don't let your eager toddlers handle the DVD as they can easily be scratched or smudged by their sticky little well-meaning hands, unlike the conventional VHS versions.
Warm visuals, but not a great attention-getter w. the kids
This video is a series of original songs with (primarily) live-action videos. The music is fairly attractive for children from the age of toddler to about 5 years (maybe). The visuals are very warm and homey showing toddlers and pre-schoolers in their world laughing, playing and doing other things that toddlers / pre-schoolers usually do. Its 'feel' reminds me of the rosiness that Sesame Street exudes in its live-action clips. The video has a home-made quality which I think adds a nice touch, but is quite noticeable to those who prefer higher production quality.
My four-year-old daughter immediately picked-up on the lyrics and can sing them to herself. I wish I had 'discovered' this video for her when she was still a toddler, because the messages of many of the songs could have been useful for potty-training and separation anxiety, among other things. But, she never chooses this video to watch, because I think she has outgrown the message and appeal.
On the other hand, the video is still beyond my nine-month old daughter. She much prefers the videos of Baby Einstein & Teletubbies. I bought this video in hopes of adding diversity to what we allow her to watch, but she is just not interested in this video. We have over 100 videos (no, I do not use the VCR as a babysitter, but my kids watch no broadcast TV; and living abroad, videos provide the opportunity for English language practice and American cultural exposure). I cannot honestly say that this is a favorite of either of my children. I anticipate revisiting this video with my younger daughter with greater success when she is 15-18 months.
Baby Songs will become a daily routine!
My daughter loved the Baby Songs video from the first time we put it in the VCR until we gave it to my nephews as a "hand-me-down." It was part of her morning routine for over a year and is now part of their night-time routine. The poor tape is nearly worn out. I will be purchasing one for the new expected nephew or niece.
Hap Palmer has been a celebrity in Kindergarten classrooms around the country for years (in fact many of us parents learned the days of the week, months of the year, colors and numbers by singing his songs in school). Hap Palmer has the gift of truly understanding children and being able to communicate with them. Any toddler who is able to enjoy this tape is very lucky.
