Customer Reviews

Outstanding capture of jazz in the early 60's5
First the bad news. It is in B&W, and the sychronization with audio and video is off. But so what!
This is outstanding jazz from the early 60's. And it spans from white dixieland to bop. Included are Joe Sullivan, Muggy Spanier, Dizzy Gillespie, and Cannonball Adderly. The show is Jazz Casual with Ralph Gleason, very well done.
Cannonball was at the height of his career. Very nice swinging tunes with Nat Adderly and Joe Zawinul.
Gillespie is featured with his quintet, with Leo Wright and Lalo Schiffrin. Dizzy is in good form, Leo plays very nice flute, and Lalo drives the moving "Toccata."
Muggsy Spanier's sextet is amazing--spans the generations. The star in this group for me is "Pops" Foster on the bass. The pianist Joe Sullivan plays with Spanier as well as solo. Sullivan's "Little Rock Getaway" was for me worth the price of the DVD.

Dizzy Gillespie/Cannonball Adderley DVD2
Overall the material is great. A real deficiecy though is the Adderley section. This has the material taken from Ralph Gleason's Jazz Casual. The problem though is the sound is off from the video by about a half second. This is very annoying to watch and destroys the DVD's quality. On the remainder of the DVD the sound lines up nicely with the video.
