Product Description

Neil Stryker, a loner with a bad attitude is hitchhiking along a sparsely populated road where he is taken in by a mild-mannered Good Samaritan. Stryker soon learns the stranger is head of a religious cult that recruits teens, suppresses their individuality and uses them for labor. Like a bullet ricocheting in a pottery store, Stryker breaks every rule that the cult has, and discovers that the cult is plotting an even more sinister secret. Armed with nothing more than two guns, near superhuman strength, a machete, an axe, and a mean sneer, Stryker engages in a hilariously ruthless bloodbath of self-defense.

Low buget filmmaking at it's best!5
Finding a low budget horror-comedy film that is actually worth watching is a difficult task to say the least. Most fall in between painful to watch and unbearable to watch, but here we have an exception. Evil Cult has everything that a horror fan could want. The funny parts are funny. The violent parts are gory... and sometimes funny. You've got a quick-witted foul-mouthed charismatic hero, an even fouler mouthed mad scientist villain, a laugh out loud ridiculously funny cult leader, and a cult full of numbskulls (who when misbehave are made even stupider). Then there's a laser gun that makes people's heads explode, axe murder jubilee, big guns, matching outfits, and oh yes... Zombies!

There's so much packed into this little film, it's hard to believe that it's a first time production made for what about equals a couple monthly house payments. It's low budget creation is sometimes painfully evident, particularly the shot-on-digital-video quality, but it's easily overcome for the sake of still being entertaining. The acting is above average, the effects considerably passable, and the writing is hilarious. None of the jokes are forced; the movie is funny because it doesn't take itself too seriously. A great example is when the hero, Neil Stryker (sounds like a porn name), is forced to kill about five guys with some garden tools. When the carnage ends, he stands up with a cocky look and just says "Yeah". No joke there, just an incredibly funny and well executed situation. I'm instantly reminded of Bruce Campbell's persona in Army of Darkness. It's all about attitude.

That comparison aside, the movie is not a rip-off of the evil dead films, despite the similarly in its title as well. It stands on its own and is quite full of originality. It does not follow a standard plot and the clichés of typical horror are subtlety made fun of. It does falter at times and not every plot device works (particularly the dungeon), but such is the missteps of attempting to be original. When a gag works, it works well. When it doesn't... eh, it moves along soon enough.

The zombies are late in showing up, but when they do, they are done brilliantly. My favorite scene in the whole movie is the emergence of a moaning and wailing zombie as it rises from a grave, whilst our hero sits with his back to the tombstone, smoking a cigarette unperturbed. He waits until the zombie fully rises and then nonchalantly dispatches it with a shot to the head. Absolute genius.

The DVD is definitely worth owning, I could give no higher recommendation than that. If you like low budget films then this should be on the top of your list.

THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME5
This is a low budget bloody as hell comedy! (Don't worry...it's supposed to be funny.) If you're smart, then you'll check this one out.

I see potential here.5
For a strait to dvd cheap horror flick, i was impressed. I could tell that much care went into making this film. There are campy moments here and there, but this movie has great build up and it totaly delivers in the end. No slap stick humor or very many jokes yet still very funny. If ya like good indie flicks, its worth checkn' out.
