Customer Reviews

Superb performance5
I got this DVD for Christmas and I've watched it about 10 times already. This is a superb performance by Stanley, and in my opinion is the best live release in terms of musical performance of all of his. The sound and picture on this are of the highest quality, better than any other music DVDs I own.

My favorite song of the concert is "One Less Bell to Answer". He plays this with such incredible emotion and with an amazing arrangement that I am just mesmerized when I watch it. In my opinion this is the best song I've ever heard him perform live.

Other highlights include "All the Children" which is performed beautifully, and "Flying Home". Other songs like "Cousin Mary" sound really great with his trio. They have a very lively sound.

The interview and bonus track are cool too. The bass and drum solos are neat on the bonus track "Return Expedition".

If you like Stanley, this video is a must have. Or if you are a guitar player and like to see amazing performances, you need to buy this too.

Impressive5
Stanley guitar playing is powerful, emtional, impressive. He plays the guitar like a piano, tapping with his fingers the entire fretboard. He also can play with two guitar at the time, doing the comping and the soloing at the same time. But the concert is not only Jordan. Charnett Moffet is an unbelievable bassist: He play with soul, I enjoy see him playing and when he enters to the solo... whoa! he shows eveything he knows. Tommy Campbell at the drums is another important piece in this concert.

Track list:
01. Flying home: 3/5 Stanley starts the concert ¨warming¨ with a beautiful song. He plays solo.
02. Cousin Mary: 4/5 Band joins Stanley. John Coltrane's standardt is played flawless.
03. Autumn leaves: 5/5 Incredible playing, impressive soloing.
04. All the children: 4/5 Another solo piece by Stanley.
05. One less bell to answer: 2/5 Not my favorite piece.
06. Eleanor Rigby: 5/5 The Beatle's cover. Jordan at his best.
07. Willow weep with me 3/5 Nice song.
08. What's going on: 4/5 This is a beautiful theme.
09. Lady in my life: 5/5 So emotional, the electric bass is perfect for this song.
10. Stairway to heaven: 5/5 Concert end with this Led Zepeelin cover.

Bonus: Return expedition Charnett Moffet is a killer bassist!
Highly recommended to any Jordan's fan, guitar players and jazz fans.

***WARNING: Put a cushion between your jaw & the floor!!!5
Oh me, oh my, oh dear. Words fail me. But I'm gonna give it a try anyway. I know there are already four 5-star reviews below, which should be enough to convince anyone, but I feel somehow compelled to throw in my two cents... Have been a Stanley Jordan fan since "Magic Touch" came out in 1985. A fellow guitarist friend turned me on to Stanley, briefly explaining that he used a unique "two-handed tapping technique". The only thing I could imagine to compare to was the VanHalen-to-Holdsworth school of fluttering arpeggios, usually on one string at a time, but my friend assured me that this was in a jazz idiom, and something I'd never heard the likes of before. Well he was right, and I became an instant fan. What blew my mind even more was how incredibly accomplished Stanley already was on his FIRST ALBUM, and at such a YOUNG AGE! Now, 21 years later, I'm blown away more than ever, because I've never been fortunate enough to attend one of his concerts, and to be able to SEE Stanley perform is nothing short of MESMERIZING. He is an absolute musical genius, period. To whom would I recommend this video? To anyone who can see and hear, I'm not kidding! Put a cushion between the floor and your lower jaw, because it will drop quickly! You do not need to be a musician or a jazz fan to appreciate SJ's unique mastery, although it helps. He transcends everything in a world all his own. There is no one to compare him to. In this stellar show from the Montreal Jazz Festival 1990, Stanley dazzles the lily-white Canadian audience's socks off, as a soloist and a trio with the able, muscular, positively athletic support of his rhythm section. Tommy Campbell on drums lends steady support, but wisely stays out of the way as Stanley dukes it out with the mighty & terrifying Charnett Moffett on bass. Watching these two monster virtuosos jam out is the musical equivalent of King Kong vs. Godzilla! And the music is BEAUTIFUL. I'm one who has a very short-lived attention span to sit and watch any kind of movie; haven't watched broadcast TV or been to a commercial movie in over 20 years. Usually about 20-30 minutes of any kind of video is the max for me. But this, this is just RIVETING from start to finish. A MUST-SEE (& HEAR)!!!
