A Narrated String of Black and White Music Video-Style Clips
I found this video enjoyable and the production quality of the DVD decent.
Essentially it is a string of black and white television clips of Dean Martin singing presented in a music-video style (right down to the MTV-esque printing of the song information in the lower left corner of the screen).
The bland, milktoast narrator gives an initial introduction before each clip starts-- but the narration is generally not very informative or insightful--comments are rather generic and give basic facts about the song (year of recording and sometimes the artist who orignially recorded it) or Dean's life which most fans already know (that he was born in Stubenville, Ohio; that he drank apple juice instead of liquor onstage; etc).
Ways to improve this DVD would be to have an option where you can turn off the in-between narration and just watch it as a constant string of Dean singing-- a little more like watching a concert. The narration can get annoying after awhile.
Also, there are no extras on this DVD. It would be nice if they could even add some old Martin-Lewis Colgate Comedy hour footage (I believe alot of it is in the public domain now anyway) at least. Further, this would be appropriate because it is around the same time as the song performances depicted in the rest of the DVD.
All in all, I'd rate this DVD somewhere between 3 and 4 stars.
Songs fine, Packaging poor
The songs from 1950s black & white Dean Martin shows are good to hear again. The package has no program notes but the case lists all 18 songs by title and composer credits. This is all you really need. But then before each number on the DVD a narrator announces the title of the song and hardly any additional information. And speak of redundant and annoying! During each song Passport Video imprints the track information plus the title of their release and their company name. A minute later on each track Passport Video imprints the name of the release again. If other Passport Video releases are packaged the same way, I would avoid them.
Caveat Emptor
The track "you belong to me" is NOT on this dvd!
The first half of the dvd is a repeat of Dino's performance recorded live in St.Louis june 20, 1965.
Essentially, what you're getting is just a handful of songs.
There are better Dean Martin dvd collections out there. Save your money.
