It's hard to imagine a more disjointed upbringing than Kevin Johansen's: the songwriter grew up in Alaska and Argentina (to an American father and Argentinean mother). As an adult he spent a decade in New York City honing his chops and writing. Since moving to Buenos Aires in 2000, he's become one of Argentina's biggest pop stars thanks to a mildly psychedelic American-style folk song sung in English entitled "Down With My Baby," which is included on Sur O No Sur. The rest of album is filled with same kinds of cultural paradoxes: he mixes the traditional and the modern while peppering his nicely polished pop gems with salsa, samba, rock, rap, reggae, cumbia, country, hip-hop, and tango. Singing in both Spanish and English (and Spanglish), Johansen has the deep baritone of Leonard Cohen, yet his lyrics are far from somber, telling us that he doesn't take himself too seriously. Other highlights included here are the impossibly infectious "Puerto Madero" and the carnival-like title track. --Tad Hendrickson

Do yourself a favor and buy this album5
I am not much of a critic or even a reviewer. But this is an excellent album full of interesting mixtures. Spanish and English, Tango, Cumbia, Grunge, and even a little bit of James Brown. And I want to recommend it to everyone I can. I have to say that my favorite song is Hindu Blues.

I have seen Kevin perform twice in Argentina and was just about blown away. This is truly a top-quality album.

Glad to see that Amazon has decided to sell Kevin's CDs, he is an oustanding musician. Also look for a previous album called De Nada.

Genius! 5
I just "discovered" Kevin Johansen due to the Latin Grammys (surprise, surprise, I guess they are good for something). I decided to venture out and buy the album...I love it. It is so witty, eclectic, humorous, and charming. It is the PERFECT album to describe living between two cultures, and he knows both so well, it is expressed through his music.

I grew up at the border in between both Mexican and U.S. culture, totally immersed in both, the daily life, contradictions from both cultures, the complexities, the absurdidies. I felt like Kevin was speaking about ME in this album. Plus, I love his take on U.S. and Argentine cultures.

I recommend this for open minded, worldly people. It is definitely not a commercial album or sound. It is a little quirky actually if you ask me, with a great sense of humor and musical genious.

What a great CD5
Thsi CD is so fresh, melodic and simply addicting that I find it incredible that fewer people in the US have not heard of Kevin Johansen.
