Planet-terror-ium
ALPHA's dub of DEATH FROM A DISTANCE has a few moments of muffled audio, but overall the transfer is OK.
This who-dun-it from Poverty Row's INVINCIBLE PICTURES was directed by Frank R. Strayer-- he's best-known for his several contributions to the "Blondie" film franchise.
SYNOPSIS--
A doctor attending a planetarium lecture is murdered, but no one in the audience sees the killer. The police are called in and the lecture attendees detained while Detective Lt. Ted Mallory (Hopton) tries to solve the crime. Kay Palmer (Lane), a stereotypical feisty girl reporter, tries to help but is generally a hindrance whom Mallory has to occasionally "put in her place." (No political correctness or women's equality here!)
This above-average murder/mystery includes the expected parade of red herrings and dead end leads. What's lacking though is background music-- while stretches of silence worked well for DRACULA (1931), here such moments can get mind-numbing.
ALPHA VIDEO is a provider of vintage programming that's often unavailable elsewhere. Their prices are fair, but so is transfer quality of some of their offerings. None have undergone restoration, yet this product's rareness and an honest price make it a worthwhile purchase.
Also from ALPHA:
In the early made-for-TV spy thriller EIGHT WITNESSES (1954), a man carrying secret documents is murdered in front of several blind people.
