Almost as good as being there5
When I was lucky enough to see Inti-Illimani live in Pucon, Chile, where they performed for a packed house of volcanologists at a conference on volcanoes at the foot of Villarica, I was stunned. I can say that I have never enjoyed a concert as much as this one for its combination of other-worldly melodies, lyrics, supremely complex blend of multiply-syncopated rhythms, and mesmerizing visual presence. I was transported, and though I knew that a CD purchase or two was now required, I thought that they wouldn't be the same as being there live.

Well, after the CD purchases (which are very much worth-it on their own, despite my fears), I was thrilled to find this DVD, which not only provides 20+ musical tracks from a concert performance in Santiago, but allows me to experience the visual dimension that is so much a part of an Inti performance. Not that they are super-active in the overdone U.S. pop sense, but the visual part of their performance: their movement around the stage as they swap around their seemingly endless array of musical instruments as the music grows and builds, their own absorption into the rhythms, melodies and beats, and yes, their blazing technical proficiencies, all enrich the aural experience. I don't speak Spanish, but it doesn't diminish my enjoyment of this remarkable ensemble; and as the group leader said at our concert in Pucon, "So what if you don't speak Spanish - nobody's perfect"...well, they come close.

BAd, bery bad.

An Exceptional Recording of an Exceptional Performance5
I have to agree with the other reviewer who gave this DVD five stars. It is among the best video productions of any concert performance that I have ever seen, and conveys the spirit, the multi-instrumental talent, and the musicianship of Inti's band members. Juan Flores' charango work on "Tinku" is as electrifying as Charlie Parker's "famous alto break" must have been for his listeners over 50 years ago. This DVD conveys the energy and soul of a performance by a band that deserves to be better known among American lovers of music from other cultures. I attended my first Inti-Illimani concert a couple of years ago on a whim in the midst of a move to a new city, and was blown away. The next year I took my family, and they were, too. We've given this DVD as a gift four or five times to introduce Inti-Illimani's music to friends and family who do not know the band, and each time the gamble of such a gift has been a smashing success. If you know Inti-Illimani, you need to have this DVD. If you don't know their music, but are open to exceptional music from other lands, take a gamble yourself. You will not be disappointed.
