As Stevie Wonder sang, "Gonna keep on tryin' / Till I reach the highest ground." That's what the artists, producers, and record executives profiled in this tuneful documentary are attempting to do. With the use of R&B grooves and hip-hop beats, they're spreading the gospel to listeners who are likely to be more familiar with Beyoncé and Jay-Z than BeBe and CeCe Winans. Marci Kenon and Damon Stout's film traces the roots of contemporary (or non-traditional) gospel, from Edwin Hawkins (1969's "Oh Happy Day") to Kirk Franklin (1997's "Stomp") and Mary Mary (2000's "Shackles")--each a Top 40 hit. Despite the occasionally wobbly camera work, Higher Ground is by turns educational and inspirational and features interviews with Hawkins, Franklin, Yolanda Adams, and other leading lights of contemporary gospel. Most can also be heard on the acompanying soundtrack, Higher Ground: Hip-Hop Reformed & Reborn, which was released at the same time. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This DVD was not what I thought it would be. I thought it was a musical DVD!

TOTALLY AWESOME DOCUMENTARY DVD!5
TOTALLY AWESOME DOCUMENTARY DVD!

This DVD is not useful only for this year or this period of time. This is totally awesome because the advice is from The HOLY SPIRIT. It is a must that every Christian Rapper or not only a rapper any kind of Gospel artist should have this and take it's advice and always remind our selves who we are in Christ our LORD & Savior. Some Artist in the main stream strive to be better than each other, but not so with a believer in Christ, according to the Word of God. According to God's Word we are kings and priests in Christ Jesus our LORD. Which means is, if we are kings we lack nothing we need according to the Word of God, because Jesus Christ is Our Sheperd (John 10) and Our Provider (Matthew 6:31-33). And which means if we are priests we are spiritually filled in The HOLY SPIRIT (1 Corinthians 2:12) and hears God's Voice (John 8:47). And each person is victorious in God's eyes, and He has a special plane for each one of us in Christ Jesus(1 Corinthians 2:9). Please we must use this DVD as and maturing tool to measuring our selves to check out, are we really serving our King or our selves.

PS- This is useful untill Christ returns to earth. and we should be unified as one, just like Christ said (John 17:20-21).

Good, exciting documentary5
I love this DVD to death. It deals with the trials and tribulations and the upside and downside of contemporary gospel music/gospel hip-hop. This documentary tells all the details behind the artists, producers, musicians, critics, etc. who discover this generation in the world of gospel music.

The first founders of Gospel were Thomas Dorsey, Mahalia Jackson, Rev. James Cleveland, Edwin Hawkins, Andrae Crouch, among others. Then came among the Clark Sisters, Yolonda Adams, The Winans, Kirk Franklin, Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Fred Hammond, Karen Clark-Sheard, Trin-i-tee 5:7, Virtue, Mary Mary, Tonex, Blind Boys of Alabama, Debra Killings, Deitrick Haddon, just to name a few.

Among the Christian hip-hop movements the first founders of that were Michael Peace, LPG, can't even describe the other 1, incl. all of the above: T-Bone, Dynamic Twins, KJ-52, John Reuben, Gospel Gangstaz, Elle R.O.C., Christsyde, The Cross Movement, Jah Word, Lil Raskull aka the Ras, Nu-Wine aka Wine-O, Antonious, The Tunnel Rats, Ayeesha, True 2 Society, Prime Minister, B.B. Jay, Mr. Del, etc.

This is a must if u're love gospel or like to get into sum like Mainstream music. I guarantee u won't be disappointed. This is a good documentary to see.
