Somebody Promote This Guy!!!4
If I didn't know Chip Shearin (Marion's touring bass player, cowriter of 2 of this CD's songs and a contributing producer and arranger), I probably wouldn't know anything about Marion Meadows. I've known Chip since he was a fledgling bassist in middle school and was in several local projects with him as he grew and matured into the bass dynamo he has become. He hooked up with Marion some 10 years ago and they have been together ever since. And that's how I got to be familiar with Marion's work.

This guy needs a better agent to promote him. On a soprano, he is better than Kim Waters and, in my meager opinion, better than Kenny G. For all his notoriety, Kenny has one move on the sax -- a long, extended run in whatever key he's playing (normally G)and he uses a particular breathing technique not always employed by sax players to hold his notes for long stretches. But that's his hook. Marion doesn't rely on anything other than an innate talent for playing jazz. It's not out of the Sidney Bechet/Illinois Jacquet style at all. But for what he's playing, it doesn't have to be. It's smooth jazz; not a watered down version of standard jazz, but a fresh interpretation of the jazz genre done with a funk base. The arrangements and the musicianship attacks with vigor and poignancy. Each song is carefully crafted to highlight artistry, but not to overpower the listener with indistinguishable notes and runs and riffs. Whether he's on his signature soprano or a surprisingly strong tenor, Marion scores a real winner with this effort.

"SMOOTH AS EVER"5
WHAT AN AWESOME EXPRESSION OF SOULFULNESS AND SMOOTHNESS! SWEET GRAPES AND DESKA AND ALL OF THE CUTS ARE SMOOTH AS CAN BE; BUT ROMANTICA IS ONE OF THE MOST SOULFUL AND EMOTIONAL INSTRUMENTAL BALLADS EVER PLAYED!
THANKS MARION FOR ANOTHER HEART-FELT EXPERIENCE!

A real player he is!5
One of the best smooth jazz albums of 2004 and has about 6
songs I really like. Most albums give you 2-3 good songs.
Good job Marion!
