Amazon.com Product Description
A great value with incredible performance and standard features not available on other models in its class, the Powermatic 209 20-Inch Planer turns out ultra-smooth surfaces quickly and consistently. And because it can create 20,000 cuts per minute, the 209 is the perfect tool for high-capacity jobs. Accurate and dependable, this planer's powerful motor, smooth feeds, and robust construction make it a true workhorse that is a must-have for every professional woodworking shop.

The 209 20-Inch Planer
At a Glance:
  • 5-HP motor operates at 5,000 RPM
  • 4-knife cutterhead makes up to 20,000 cuts/minute
  • 2 feed speeds of 24' and 31' per minute
  • Converts to 4 speeds via gear box
  • Cast-iron components for durability
  • 5-inch dust port

Locking knobs secure the table to the lead screws within the front and rear columns.

For exceptional finishes, anti-kickback fingers and a pressure bar are located in close proximity to the cutterhead.
Powerful Motor and Cutterhead for Big Results
The 209 owes its vigorous performance to a five-horsepower motor. Power is transferred from the motor directly to the four-knife cutterhead at 5,000 RRM, which allows for up to 20,000 cuts per minute. This robust design not only means you'll be able to get jobs done quickly, but you'll also be able to tackle workpieces up to eight inches thick and 20 inches wide (minimum length of 6-3/4 inches).

For exceptional finishes, anti-kickback fingers and a pressure bar are located in close proximity to the cutterhead.

Smooth Infeeds and Outfeeds
The Powermatic 209 offers two feed speeds--24 and 31 feet per minute--and the option of upgrading to four speeds via the gear box and included parts.

With this planer, even heavy loads are no problem, as the 209 automatically slows the feed rollers to ensure smooth cuts. To help you return heavy boards to the infeed, there are two heavy-duty return rollers located on top of the machine.

Adjustable, Durable Tables and Convenient Dust Port
The 209's tables are made of cast iron with polished, precision-ground surfaces for durability and easy feeds. A pair of extension wings lets you handle larger workpieces, and four posts give you plenty of workpiece support.

For convenience, a five-inch dust port hooks up to your dust collection system for improved visibility while you work.

Dimensions and Warranty Information
The Powermatic 209 measures 36.6 x 41.3 x 26.0 inches, weighs 770 pounds, and comes with a five-year warranty.

This big beauty turns out some of the smoothest surfaces we’ve ever seen, but since it’s coming from Powermatic, it’s really no surprise. The 5 horsepower motor powers along a four-knife cutterhead at 5,000 rpm, producing 20,000 cuts per minute, and the results are outstanding.

This planer’s capacity is just intense, taking in boards as wide as 20 inches with a max thickness of 8 inches – and its capacity for minimum length is surprisingly small, at 6-3/4 inches. Knife adjustment or removal will require a little patience, but it’s not a chore that will have to be done with any frequency.

This planer comes with two feed speeds of 24 and 31 feet per minute, but the gear box is easily converted to four speeds with the included parts – just replace the lower gear shaft sprocket and chain to have access to speeds of 16.2 and 20.7 feet per minute. When you’re running a heavy load, the planer automatically slows the feed rollers, so you get the very best planing every time.

Powermatic even makes life easier for you when you’re not actually planing – by putting two heavy-duty return rollers on top of the machine to help you get heavy boards back to the infeed side. The tables on both ends are smooth-as-glass cast iron and give you great stock support.

The fully enclosed cabinet is solid as a rock and features a 5-inch dust port to hook up to your dust collection system. You’ll really need to be moving at least 900 cubic feet per minute for the dust extraction to be effective. Take care not to install the dust port if you’re not hooking into a collection system, though, because the abundant sawdust will clog your machine in no time.

Since belts tend to stretch, you’ll probably find you have to tighten the belt the first few times you use the planer. It’s an easy process that involves taking off the guard and rear panel, loosening the nuts on the motor adjustment screws and turning the top nuts to lower the motor plate. Tighten back up and it’s done. Aside from that, with attentive lubrication, this beauty will last you for decades.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

From the Manufacturer
This heavy duty planer offers performance and value, loaded with standard features not found on other machines in it's class. The powerful 5HP motor and 20" planing capacity will handle the most demanding work. The 5" dust port connects easly to any dust collector. The cutterhead has four high speed steel knives and turns at 5000 RPM producing 20,000 cuts per minute. The anti-kickback finger and pressure bar are located in close proximity to the cutterhead for an exceptional finish. The solid cast iron base, table and head are designed for production. The 2-speed oil bath gearbox transmits full power to feed rollers and facilitates fast speed changes at 24 and 31 FPM. The gearbox can be changed to 4-speed with the included gear to run lower speeds of 16 and 20 FPM. The corrugated infeed and fine groove outfeed rollers ensure a smooth feed. The precision ground and polished cast iron table rides on four steel posts giving it plenty of support for the larger workpiece. Heavy cast iron extension wings ensure a flat, smooth cut.

Powermatic 20" planer4
I just read the one star report and had to add my comments on the planer. Almost all woodworking machinery is now made in China unless you buy expensive European machines. This is not what I prefer. It is reality. I received my planer about a month ago. It had no rust and works as it should. I would recommend it highly. I am a professional woodworker/cabinet maker and use the planer almost daily. It replaced a 12" Robland jointer/planer (European Made). I like the Powermatic's larger capacity and it's 5 hp motor really gets it on. I may update this planer with one from Felder (Austrian made) some day but that is a major difference in cost. In its class, the Powermatic just can't be beat.

After reading a few reviews here, I can understand some of the dissapointments.
We received our planer in good condition and did need to fine tune some of the settings. We consider this fairly normal however. The one problem we experienced out the gate though was that a chip deflector broke from it's weld and fell into the knife head. Since we purchase this unit from a large dealership, Powermatic shipped all the needed replacement parts immediately. Unfortunately, our several hours of labor required to fix the unit were not covered. Not a big surprise though.
If you are a serious woodworker or have a medium or larger shop, I would highly recommend replacing the cutter head with the one offered by Byrd Tool as we did.
The results were more than like night and day. We have had the same knives in the planer for almost 6 months and have yet to change or adjust them. Extremely quiet, vertually no tear out or chatter. Powermatic used to offer this head with a few select machines. We will use this new head design on all our joiners and planers.

Shipping issues4
the first unit arrived in terrible condition. It was not securred to the pallet and the crating was not designed to ship something of this weight. Amazon went above and beyond when it came to replacing the unit. I received the second unit with less damage but still not an up to standard shipping crate. This time Amazon sent the replacement parts and the unit is a hungry working monster. I love it. A little rust on one of the infeed conveyors. Amazon is king when it comes to something of this size. I was nervous ordering machinery of this magnitude. I would and will buy from Amazon again.
