Eddie Izzard--a strong candidate for the funniest human being alive--hosts an entertaining smorgasbord of musicians and stand-up comics at this benefit event celebrating Amnesty International's 40th anniversary. Some of the humor trades heavily on British references and the comedians are largely unknown in the U.S., but that doesn't keep them from being very funny. Musicians include U2, Badly Drawn Boy, and Tom Jones, who all deliver stirring performances. Political references are surprisingly few, but there are some pointed bits--Jeremy Hardy sardonically notes: "Why would the police bother to arrest innocent people? Because they are easier to catch." Not only does Izzard (Glorious, Dress to Kill) sprinkle a variety of short routines throughout the show, another comic will delight Izzard fans with his spot-on imitation of how Izzard would play the young Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews

I was NOT disappointed!5
Other reviewers have expressed disappointment in this DVD. Fortunately, I ignored these opinions and purchased the DVD anyway. I was NOT disappointed. This performance is EXACTLY what one would expect of a benefit for a good cause...and what better cause is there than Amnesty International? There are so many talented performers who donated their efforts that, naturally, each one has rather brief air-time. This is typical of such venues. I cannot understand why anyone would be disappointed in the length of Eddie Izzard's exposure; he is the host and has many additional appearances. Another criticism is that the comedians and their British humor is, for the most part, unfamiliar to an American viewer, and that the accents are difficult. I, for one, always enjoy "discovering" new comedians and actually found it interesting to listen to the various accents. For some reason, when I hear a joke delivered in any version of a British accent, it always seems funnier. Maybe this is a throwback to my younger days, when I became a rabid fan of "Monty Python". In any case, I hope that, any reader of THIS review will understand that this was a charity performance with many talented comedians, actors, and musicians doing what they do best for a noble cause.

Good with aspects of brilliance and crap3
NO ITS NOT AN EDDIE IZZARD VIDEO

He's the Host, and between announcing the next act he does cut down versions of jokes from his hillarious stand-up back catalogue. They are stiil good but the originals are better

Some good comedy here, as previously stated the comparison where eddie izzard is suggested as the true obi-won and eddie mimic is fantsatic. Unfortunately you also get a stupid bald guy with a ridiculously high collar who is boring annoying, and very very unfunny.

Some excellent stuff, mixed in with alot of rubbish. A stocking filler only if you already have evrything possible by eddie izzard first.

Get real value for your money and buy these instead; ..ALL EDDIE IZZARD STAND UP VIDEO's ......
ie:- "dressed to kill"; "The Definate Article"; "Glorious"; "Unrepeatable"; "Sexie"; "Circle" IN THAT ORDER

The ultimate eddie izzard has got to be Pavlov's cat experiments (The definate article)....

this IS for charity!5
I think most of the reviewers were looking for another program which was exclusively Eddie doing his comedy. I agree that the title is a bit misleading, but don't forget that this IS for charity. Amnesty International is a great organisation, and this DVD did NOT disappoint.
