Paint it Black
Like no other, iPod U2 Special Edition stands out. Jet black, it bears a prominent red Apple Click Wheel and, on the flip side, the autographs of each U2 band member. It comes with an exclusive U2 poster and, of course, the signature white iPod earbuds. As an extra special treat, it includes an iTunes Music Store coupon you can use to get $50 off your purchase of "The Complete U2." As unique as the iPod itself, this digital boxed set brings together an amazing 400 U2 tracks. Songs span the band's celebrated career. From "Boy" to "War" to "The Joshua Tree" to "Zooropa" to the soon-to-be-released "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," it includes every U2 album and features over 25 rare and unreleased tracks.

All I Want Is You
Like other members of the iPod family, iPod U2 Special Edition makes listening to music sheer delight. The fabulous Apple Click Wheel lets you scroll through all your songs, albums and playlists effortlessly. And you can certainly keep plenty of your music on this 20GB iPod. In fact, after purchasing and downloading "The Complete U2," you'll still have enough room for as many as 4,600 other songs.

No matter how much music or how many Audiobooks you bring with you, however, iPod Special Edition remains small and light enough to carry in your pocket: it's no bigger than a pack of playing cards and weighs just 5.6 ounces. It also offers up to 12 hours of battery life, so you can listen to music practically all day.(2) And thanks to 25 minutes of skip protection, you can lead a really active lifestyle -- jogging, bicycling, skate- or snowboarding -- without missing a beat.

What's more, with iPod Special Edition, you enjoy the best auto-sync in the industry. Just connect iPod to your Mac or PC, and iTunes takes care of business, keeping both iTunes and iPod in perfect harmony. Whether you've imported new tunes from CDs or downloaded and purchased them from the iTunes Music Store, iTunes will quickly move them to iPod. Create any On-the-Go Playlists? iTunes will spot those right away, add them to your existing playlists, and update play counts and ratings at the same time.

Apple Ease Crosses Platforms
Whether you use a Windows PC or a Mac, iPod offers a superior solution. You can synchronize your music and data effortlessly, without having to tweak settings each time you transfer files between your iPod and your computer. Simply add new music to iTunes by downloading it from the integrated iTunes Music Store or importing it from your CDs in MP3, AAC or the new Apple Lossless format. Mac owners', can also export their GarageBand compositions to their iTunes music library.

Transfer Your Music Automatically
Once you connect your iPod to your Mac or PC, iTunes automatically begins to update its contents. You don't even have to press a button. iTunes becomes aware that you've connected your iPod and displays it in the Source column. In fact, you can see your music and playlists at a glance. If your iTunes library exceeds the iPod's storage capacity, you can let iTunes fill your iPod or iPod mini for you. iTunes will create a playlist that fits your style -- and your iPod's capacity. iTunes also picks up any of the On-the-Go playlists you've made on your iPod, so you can play or edit them on your Mac or PC. For finer control over your portable music collection, you can turn off Auto-Sync and select your iPod's contents manually.

Customer Reviews

Great system, great looks5
I received the iPod U2 Special Edition for Christmas. Not because I'm a huge U2 fan (a fan, but not a huge fan), but because it so matches my car's interior. Hey, who said all gifts have to have a practical, reasonable explanaition?

I love it, and there are some errors in earlier reviews which I wanted to address.

1. This is a 20Gb unit, not 40, and a 3rd generation. It does not have a color screen or photo viewing options. It DOES act as an external hard drive on both Windows and Mac systems.

2. iTunes is VERY easy to use. It can automatically search an online database of tracknames and then update your iTunes and iPod for those CD's that don't report that info automatically. It is a two click process. Under Advanced, just select Get CD Track Names. Then under File, select Update Song's on iPod. If yur CD is not found in the online database, you can help the iPod community under Advanced by Submit CD Track Names.

3. The iPod, no matter what flavor you get, is the BEST music player on the market. Hands down. Sound, ease of use, design, and available accessories (including car kits by many auto manufacturers like BMW, MINI, etc.) make it the best. Apple has many plans for the iPod, making it the center of its digital world. Look for it to have even more features in future updates.

I don't regret waiting for this generation of iPod, I don't need the picture viewing of the newer models, and this is the coolest looking iPod of all!

Very nice5
First, let me talk about the internal elements of this special edition iPod. This is pretty basic, as it is really just a 20 GB iPod. It doesn't download quicker or anything. It has the same great iPod quality, and my favorite iPod distinction, it feels sturdy in my hand. Now, on to the true selling point- the physical attributes of this beauty. First of all, I dig the black and red color scheme, which corresponds to the bands latest alblum, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (don't dig the name). I know it may not be for everyone, but this is what sold me on it, even though I am not a big U2 fan. Another thing I liked was the glossy finish of the U2 edition. Now the downside- black shows scratches easier. This, however, is not to big of a problem. My solution is to just by a case (clear, preferably, to show the brilliant colors). Another cool feature is signatures on the back by the band members. These laser-engraved autographs are pretty nifty, and are a distinctive feature.Overall, this is a great iPod. A little overpriced at, but the $50 off the complete U2 at iTunes sort of makes up for it. Just remember, this isn't for all. It really makes you standout!

Buy Apple Protection Plan!!!!!4
i wrote the review below last year and thought i'd provide a little update. we are on our 5th replacement of this ipod! the hard disk keeps failing. because we have applecare, apple has been replacing the unit, but what a hassle! i don't know why this version has so many problems. i'd say stay away and by another model. if i could change my inital rating of this unit i would change to 1 star. (although in all fairness, the apple store says they haven't seen a lot of these brought in for service - maybe we're just cursed).

We loved this iPod, but it did just stop working after 11 months. We were always careful with the iPod - never abused it, didn't run with it so it wasn't subjected to shock - but one day it just wouldn't power up properly (you could hear the hard drive stuck). Luckily we were still within the one year warranty period. Apple replaced the iPod free of charge (provided we purchased the additional one year warranty through apple care). The new iPod Apple gave us stopped working in less than a day!!!!! Something is wrong with these units! Again, Apple replaced the iPod without charge. Lesson learned: it is worth purchasing the Apple Care extended warranty!!
