eclectic percussion compositions
Glenie's "Shadow Behind the Iron Sun" is an eclecitc mix perhaps best cateorized as a modern classical percussion. The pieces are peppy, mysterious, and really beyond any easy categorization. They might conjure images of volcanoes, japanese gardens, secret agents in 1960s spy thrillers, Hawaiin rainforsts, calving glaciers, and gypsy dancers. Many have a pulsing rhythm similar perhaps to modern house beats, but are gentler, more melodic, like steady raindrops - lulling, hypnotic, even exciting.
A Visit with the Percussion Gods
The collection of vignettes on "Shadow Behind The Iron Sun" are thematically consistent while being spectacularly varied. Each piece is simultaneously mysterious and exciting and gives one the impression that you traveled through a dark country in an alternative universe. I sometimes imagine I'm listening to the recitation of mythical adventures from an ancient story teller that speaks in soundscapes.
Evelyn Glennie will expand your concept of percussion instrumentation while constantly hanging you over a cliff of anticipation for the arrival of the next note.
This album begs for a really stellar sound reproduction system, but if you have to upgrade merely to listen to this album, it will be worth it!
