Customer Reviews

The Heart of "The Dubliners:" Of the Bob Dylan School5
"The Dubliners" were among the first and the strongest of the Irish folk groups that led the folk renaissance of the 1960s; and Luke Kelly, who had previously had a successful solo career singing around Dublin, was at their heart. He was of the Bob Dylan school: his voice was raw, rough, and immediate; he didn't mince words, or polish them, but communicated directly, passionately, and respectfully with his preferred working class audience.

Kelly never recorded a solo album, but on this double CD, we get 18 songs taken from studio recordings, and a further 13 from live shows, reflecting the kinetic energy of his live performances. It's the best we're going to do. The Dubliners' first hit, eventually covered by every Irish folk band, was a rude and rollicking "Whiskey in the Jar:" included here; it was met with disapproval in the prudish Ireland of the time. "The Wild Rover" and "Home Boys Home,"included here as well, are also get-up and boogie rockers. On the more serious side, sung with great feeling and soaring vocals, are "Free the People," ""Dirty Old Town," and "The Town I Loved So Well." They seem to come directly to us from another time and place, as fresh as the day they were first sung.

Oh yes, and rumor has it that Kelly was the one who pushed Bob Dylan onstage at the Newport Folk Festival.

More Than a Three - Star Collection5
I had to write this review to bring the average rating up. I am at a loss as to why Amazon allows people to post feedback on their purchases as a review of the CD itself. How can a one-star shopping experience be allowed to dilute the rating of this five-star listening experience ? Dive right in and listen to one of Ireland's finest ever singers scorch through many memorable tunes, giving several of them their definitive readings. And a brilliant live recording as well. A five-star no-brainer.

The Progrock Store1
Unfortunately theproduct was never delivered to me so I am unable to review this item, however I found both Amazon and Progrock store to be extremely helpful and efficient and can only compliment them on their customer service levels.
