Cute Show, Great Lessons
"Timothy Goes to School" is a program that aired on PBSKids Bookworm Bunch and more recently on TLC and Discovery Kids. However, I had never seen it until I saw this DVD. It's by Nelvana and many of the same people who have worked on other series I enjoy, such as "Franklin," so I thought I would like it. I definitely wasn't disappointed.
"Timothy Goes to School" is about Timothy and all of his friends who attend a class taught by Mrs. Jenkins. Timothy, however, takes a backseat in these particular stories, as the focus turns to Timothy's friends.
The first story is called "On the Fritz," a story I recognize as being based on the Rosemary Wells book "Fritz and the Mess Fairy." Fritz is very messy --- leaving disasters whereever he goes, hiding the mess in his room in the closet and under the bed, etc. However, in this story, Fritz is forced to come face-to-face with the results of messy ways and take action. A wonderful story about honesty and responsibility.
The second is called "The Taketombo" --- Yoko receives a Japanese toy called a taketombo that has been passed down in her family now for three generations. The taketombo is a beautiful, sort of flying-pinwheel type toy. She gets permission to take it to school with her for "In the Spotlight" (show-and-tell) The brothers Frank and Frank end up breaking the taketombo after playing football when they were told not to. They tell Yoko that they're sorry, but Yoko is still upset. Then, their Dad reveals to them "the three sorries," helping them to see how they can make it up to Yoko.
Finally, there's "Lost and Found," another story involving Yoko and a family treasure. This time, she's given a set of Japanese figures, which she agrees to take really good care of. She takes them to school for In the Spotlight and follows through on her word --- not allowing anyone to play with them and stashing them safely in her cubby once she's through. But the figurines disappear from the cubby and Yoko is devastated. Mrs. Jenkins holds a Lost and Found day to see if anyone can find them.
This DVD has continuous play, or you can also choose to select episodes individually. The special features generally aren't any great shakes --- previews for other Our Time Family Entertainment DVDs and Weblinks to Games and Activities. However, there is one nice special feature --- a 'special preview' of the show "Marvin the Tap-Dancing Horse" which is actually a complete 13 minute story. The packaging and DVD artwork is also nicely designed. However, don't read the episode summaries on the back of the DVD unless you wanna be spoiled on a lot more than what I've said in my review.
The only really disappointing thing about the DVD is that there aren't any captions or subtitles.
