Editorial Reviews
From the Studio
Born in Minneapolis and raised in San Diego, director Lew Ayres, a college dropout, was found by a talent scout in a nightclub in Los Angeles. A conscientious objector, Ayres served as a reluctant medic in World War II. His anti-war sentiments are apparent in this film based on the lives of Americans during the Civil War. Hearts in Bondage is one of the only three movies that Ayres directed, the other two being Alters of the World and Alters of the East. A2ZCDS have brought this old Hollywood Classic feature films on DVD.
THE PLOT:Torn between love and loyalty, Naval officers Lieutenant Kenneth Reynolds (James Dunn), his friend Raymond Jordan (David Manners) and two senior Naval officers, Commander Jordan (Henry B. Walthall) and Captain Buchanan (Fritz Leiber) are faced with difficult decisions when the civil war breaks out. Reynolds is in love with Jordan’s sister Constance (Mae Clarke), while Jordan adores Julie (Charlotte Henry), the daughter of Captain Buchanan. During the fierce naval battle on the East Coast, old friends Kenneth and Raymond find themselves on opposite sides, as do Captains Buchanan and Jordan. Despite Constance’s pleas, Kenneth enlists and is soon in the heat of a bitter sea-battle, in which Raymond is killed. Constance is heartbroken at the news of her brother’s death, and it takes the intervention of none other than President Abe Lincoln himself to set things right between her and Kenneth.

Customer Reviews
Excellent Civil War Film!!!
I found this an excellent choice. Remastering is well done. The film is delightful at times. It is a fine example of a historic fims that captures a key point in our nation's history. Filming of the sea fighting between the Monitor and the Merrimac is as exciting as current naval battles. Interchange between President Lincoln and the main characters are especially inciteful, especially as seen from the perspective of the current times in America.
Great movie..crappy packaging and not remastered.
A reasonable but hardly remastered print of the film in tissue paper packaging. That said, this is still a great film about the Monitor and the Merrimac and one is very pleased that it is finally available.
A Metaphor For A Divided America
At a time in American history when people are so divided in our country I can't think of a better film to see. The point of this movie, set during the Civil War, is that American's may find themselves on different sides of an issue, but we are all still Americans and live lives of common decency. In this case, two best friends end up on different sides of the same war - literally shoot at each other at one point. Of course, this being a Hollywood film, eventually their friendship and Americanism wins over and they become united again - much like America did after the Civil War. This is an amazingly subtle and well done film that still resonates.
